{"id":8422,"date":"2019-05-22T16:07:32","date_gmt":"2019-05-22T16:07:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/fas\/psych\/glossary\/mind-blindness_theory\/"},"modified":"2019-05-22T16:07:32","modified_gmt":"2019-05-22T16:07:32","slug":"mind-blindness_theory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/fas\/psych\/glossary\/mind-blindness_theory\/","title":{"rendered":"Mind-blindness theory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A theory claiming that in people with autism and Asperger&#8217;s syndrome, there are degrees of mind blindness, or difficulties in imagining and being aware of other people&#8217;s emotional and mental states. &nbsp;Allied to such difficulties is that mind blindness is associated with being incapable of attributing beliefs and desires to others. &nbsp;This is often the result of a specific developmental delay in acquiring a theory of mind. &nbsp;Such deficits in social insight have also been reported in other disorders such as schizophrenia as well as presenting during the ageing process in some individuals. The association of autism with mind blindness was first proposed in a landmark <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icn.ucl.ac.uk\/dev_group\/ufrith\/documents\/Baron-Cohen,%20Leslie%20and%20Frith,%20Does%20the%20autistic%20child%20have%20a%20&#39;Theory%20of%20Mind&#39;%20copy.pdf\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" target=\"_self\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/www.icn.ucl.ac.uk\/dev_group\/ufrith\/documents\/Baron-Cohen,%20Leslie%20and%20Frith,%20Does%20the%20autistic%20child%20have%20a%20&#39;Theory%20of%20Mind&#39;%20copy.pdf&amp;target=_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">paper<\/a> by Baron-Cohen et al.
