{"id":8440,"date":"2019-05-22T16:07:43","date_gmt":"2019-05-22T16:07:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/fas\/psych\/glossary\/molecular_biology\/"},"modified":"2019-05-22T16:07:43","modified_gmt":"2019-05-22T16:07:43","slug":"molecular_biology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/fas\/psych\/glossary\/molecular_biology\/","title":{"rendered":"Molecular biology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A combination of genetics and biochemistry, it has become a dominant branch of biology that studies the structure and function of biological macromolecules (e.g., nucleic acids such as DNA, proteins), and the relationships of their functioning to the structure of a cell. &nbsp;In particular, it focuses on the processes of DNA replication, and transcription and translation involved in protein synthesis (i.e., the synthesis of proteins from amino acids). &nbsp;The term &#8216;molecular biology&#8217;\u201a was apparently first used by <a href=\"http:\/\/www-history.mcs.st-andrews.ac.uk\/Biographies\/Weaver.html\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/www-history.mcs.st-andrews.ac.uk\/Biographies\/Weaver.html&amp;target=_self\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Warren Weaver<\/a> (1894-1978) in 1938, who together with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyu.edu\/pages\/linguistics\/courses\/v610003\/shan.html\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/www.nyu.edu\/pages\/linguistics\/courses\/v610003\/shan.html&amp;target=_self\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Claude E.
