{"id":8556,"date":"2019-05-22T16:08:59","date_gmt":"2019-05-22T16:08:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/fas\/psych\/glossary\/neuropsychology\/"},"modified":"2019-05-22T16:08:59","modified_gmt":"2019-05-22T16:08:59","slug":"neuropsychology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/fas\/psych\/glossary\/neuropsychology\/","title":{"rendered":"Neuropsychology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A sub-discipline in physiological psychology that studies brain-behavior relationships in humans, particularly those relating to cognitive functions, by means of specially-devised tests and the use of experimental procedures. &nbsp;Studies of patients with verifiable brain lesions has become a hallmark of research in neuropsychology, following the operation carried out by the neurosurgeon <a href=\"http:\/\/neurosurgery.org\/society\/bio.aspx?MemberID=2855\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" target=\"_self\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/neurosurgery.org\/society\/bio.aspx?MemberID=2855?target=_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">William B. Scoville<\/a> (1906-1984) in 1953 on the epileptic patient <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IKP6tBhM2T4\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" target=\"_self\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IKP6tBhM2T4?target=_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">H.M<\/a>. &nbsp;The bilateral removal of the hippocampus and associated structures resulted in H.M. being unable to store or retrieve new memories. &nbsp;As a consequence, research shifted from attempts to localise memory to studying how memories are stored or retrieved. &nbsp;The term &#8216;neuropsychology&#8217; appears to have been used first by the physician <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archives.upenn.edu\/people\/1800s\/osler_william.html\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" target=\"_self\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/www.archives.upenn.edu\/people\/1800s\/osler_william.html&amp;target=_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">William Osler<\/a> (1849-1919) in 1913 during a talk he gave to mark the opening of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/psychiatry\/about\/anniversary\/origin_Phipps.html\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" target=\"_self\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/psychiatry\/about\/anniversary\/origin_Phipps.html&amp;target=_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phipps Clinic<\/a> at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. &nbsp;Through the work of <a href=\"http:\/\/ai.ato.ms\/MITECS\/Entry\/thompson1.html\" target=\"_self\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/ai.ato.ms\/MITECS\/Entry\/thompson1.html&amp;target=_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Karl S. Lashley <\/a>(1890-1958) and the publication of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2442722\/\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" target=\"_self\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2442722\/&amp;target=_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Donald O.
