{"id":8618,"date":"2019-05-22T16:09:40","date_gmt":"2019-05-22T16:09:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/fas\/psych\/glossary\/occipital-temporal_pathway\/"},"modified":"2019-05-22T16:09:40","modified_gmt":"2019-05-22T16:09:40","slug":"occipital-temporal_pathway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/fas\/psych\/glossary\/occipital-temporal_pathway\/","title":{"rendered":"Occipital-temporal pathway"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Connections between the occipital lobe (involved in vision) and temporal lobe (involved in visual cognition). &nbsp;Long-standing anatomical evidence led to conclusion that there are direct fiber connections between the two lobes via the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/medical\/inferior%20longitudinal%20fasciculus\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" target=\"_self\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/medical\/inferior%20longitudinal%20fasciculus&amp;target=_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">inferior longitudinal fasciculus<\/a>. &nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/brain.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/126\/9\/2093.full.pdf\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" target=\"_self\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/brain.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/126\/9\/2093.full.pdf&amp;target=_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">More recent evidence<\/a> in humans and monkeys suggests otherwise: connections between the two regions are both indirect involving a chain of U-shaped association fibers, and direct consistent with previous anatomical evidence (see figure below). &nbsp;In right-handed individuals, the left occipital-temporal cortex (lvOT) is held to be crucial for skilled reading (viz., rapid wriiten letter identification). &nbsp;However, as revealed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.academia.edu\/1825804\/Is_ventral_occipito-temporal_cortex_necessary_for_normal_reading\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" target=\"_self\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/www.academia.edu\/1825804\/Is_ventral_occipito-temporal_cortex_necessary_for_normal_reading  &amp;target=_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stroke patients <\/a>with lvOT damage, other neural pathways in the left hemisphere can support this reading skill. &nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.haskins.yale.edu\/papers\/intervention_biol_psych_200.pdf\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" target=\"_self\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/www.haskins.yale.edu\/papers\/intervention_biol_psych_200.pdf&amp;target=_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Remedial intervention <\/a>with children who have reading disabilities revealed significant gains in reading fluency and increased activitation in the left hemisphere including the lvOT as derived from fMRI.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"..\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Occipito-temporal-pathway.jpg\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" class=\"\">Two sets of fiber connections between right hemisphere occipital and temporal lobes as viewed from below: indirect occipitotemporal projection system consisting of U-shaped fiber connections (red) and direct occipitotemporal connections via the inferior longitudinal fasciculus (green). &nbsp;Adapted from <a href=\"http:\/\/brain.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/128\/10\/2224.full.pdf\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" target=\"_self\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/brain.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/128\/10\/2224.full.pdf&amp;target=_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Catani et al.
