nucleus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of two nuclei of the oculomotor nerve. &nbsp;The main oculomotor nucleus is located in the anterior part of the gray matter surrounding the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxforddictionaries.com\/definition\/american_english\/cerebral-aqueduct\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/www.oxforddictionaries.com\/definition\/american_english\/cerebral-aqueduct&amp;target=_self\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cerebral aqueduct<\/a> of the midbrain at the level of the superior colliculus. &nbsp;It consists of a cluster neurons that supply all extrinsic muscles of the eye, with the exception of the <a href=\"http:\/\/medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com\/superior+oblique+muscle\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com\/superior+oblique+muscle&amp;target=_self\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">superior oblique<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/lateral+rectus+muscle\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/lateral+rectus+muscle&amp;target=_self\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lateral rectus<\/a>. &nbsp;It receives fibers from both cerebral hemispheres, the superior colliculus (and from here the visual cortex), and has connections with cranial nerves IV, VI and VIII via the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/medical\/medial%20longitudinal%20fasciculus\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/medical\/medial%20longitudinal%20fasciculus&amp;target=_self\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">medial longitudinal fasciculus<\/a>. &nbsp;This nucleus controls the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/inferior+rectus+muscle\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/inferior+rectus+muscle&amp;target=_self\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">inferior<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/medial+rectus+muscle\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/medial+rectus+muscle&amp;target=_self\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">medial<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/superior+oblique+muscle\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/superior+oblique+muscle&amp;target=_self\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">superior rectus<\/a> muscles, the i<a href=\"http:\/\/medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com\/inferior+oblique+muscle\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com\/inferior+oblique+muscle&amp;target=_self\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nferior oblique<\/a> muscle and the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/medical\/levator%20palpebrae%20superioris\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/medical\/levator%20palpebrae%20superioris&amp;target=_self\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> levator palpebrae superioris<\/a>, the latter controlling movements of the eyelid. &nbsp;The accessory parasympathetic (or Erdinger-Westphal) nucleus is situated just behind the main oculomotor nucleus and controls the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/medical\/ciliary%20ganglion\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/medical\/ciliary%20ganglion&amp;target=_self\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ciliary ganglion<\/a>, which innervates the <a href=\"http:\/\/medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com\/sphincter+pupillae\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com\/sphincter+pupillae&amp;target=_self\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sphincter pupillae<\/a> that contracts the pupil in response to changes in light intensity and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/medical\/ciliary%20muscle\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/medical\/ciliary%20muscle&amp;target=_self\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ciliary muscle<\/a>&nbsp;that changes the shape of the lens to allow visual accommodation. &nbsp;Damage to the oculomotor nerve (e.g., as a consequence of a stroke) results in oculomotor nerve palsy and associated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/strabismus\" class=\"cc-route-enabled\" data-editable-link=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/strabismus&amp;target=_self\"
