{"id":8880,"date":"2019-05-22T16:12:31","date_gmt":"2019-05-22T16:12:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/fas\/psych\/glossary\/pupillometry\/"},"modified":"2019-05-22T16:12:31","modified_gmt":"2019-05-22T16:12:31","slug":"pupillometry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/fas\/psych\/glossary\/pupillometry\/","title":{"rendered":"Pupillometry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Diameter of the pupil of the human eyedoes not only change in response to variations in ambient light (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WwB2jyj2lYM\" data-editable-link=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WwB2jyj2lYM?target=_self\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pupillary light reflex)<\/a>, but it additionally responds to the perception of arousing oremotionally relevant stimuli and to the increased cognitive load caused bymemory demands (e.g., by increasing the span of a string of digits to be remembered),or the difficulty of mental calculations. &nbsp;Pupillometry makes use of this effectby using the pupil diameter as dependent variable to measure infants\u2019 (andadults\u2019) processing of observed stimuli and events. &nbsp;The technique has proved to be useful in screening for a number of disorder (e.g.,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2893537\/\" data-editable-link=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2893537\/?target=_self\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">diabetes<\/a>).
