{"id":8890,"date":"2019-05-22T16:12:37","date_gmt":"2019-05-22T16:12:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/fas\/psych\/glossary\/quantitative_genetic_theory\/"},"modified":"2019-05-22T16:12:37","modified_gmt":"2019-05-22T16:12:37","slug":"quantitative_genetic_theory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/fas\/psych\/glossary\/quantitative_genetic_theory\/","title":{"rendered":"Quantitative genetic theory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A mathematical theory that aims to predict the responses to natural selection, given data on phenotypes and relationships among individuals. &nbsp;In recent times, the theory has been extended to include the analysis of quantitative trait loci. &nbsp;Quantitative traits are those that are under the influence of a number of genes, and their mapping onto a location on a chromosome requires the accurate identification of phenotypical pedigree and marker data from a large number of related individuals. &nbsp;In general, quantitative genetics builds on some of the mathematical formulations in population genetics. &nbsp;The theory developed from the honours thesis of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1456759\/\" target=\"_self\" data-editable-link=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1456759\/?target=_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ronald A.
