Visual Culture and the Remembrance of General Gordon

George William Joy's painting of "The Death of General Gordon" remains one of the iconic images of Britain's imperial past. This paper will chart the circulation of Joy's painting in the years after its exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1894, to consider how visual culture has shaped the remembrance of empire.

In association with the Lancaster Interdisciplinary Postcolonial Seminar (LIPS), the Department of History, and the Department of European Languages and Cultures.
