The Zapatistas: Struggle for and New Models of AutonomyDate: 20 January 2010 Time: 5.00 pm Venue: Bowland North Seminar Room 13 DELC Research Seminar with the collaboration of the Latin America Research Cluster Paul Chatterton (Leeds) will talk on 'The Zapatistas: Struggle for and New Models of Autonomy". The Zapatista struggle in the Chiapas state of Mexico has been one of the most inspiring struggles in the world showing the possibilities of resisting neoliberalism and creating a new world. Paul Chatterton from Leeds University and the solidarity group Kiptik will explain the origins of the uprising, give an update on the current situation and outline what it means for social movements fighting against for greater autonomy today. ˇYa Basta! Dr Paul Chatterton's research interests include urban culture (focusing on youth cultures of resistance, and regeneration policies), protest and social movements, and sustainable and international development (with a focus on the Argentinian popular rebellion and the Zapatista uprising in Mexico).
