Schools Africa Project - African Studies Group Research Seminar

In 2003 a pilot study undertaken by the Leeds University Centre for African Studies (LUCAS) found that young people often have a distorted and unbalanced perspective of Africa and its peoples. Over the past three years LUCAS has been addressing this issue by recruiting and training African post-graduate students studying at Leeds University to deliver 'African Voices' programmes in local schools. Alongside these educational interventions Richard Borowski conducted research into the impact of the African students on young people's perceptions of Africa. During this seminar he will be sharing some of the results of his research and exploring the reasons why most young people perceive African people to be poor, helpless and in need of western charity.
Richard Borowski is the LUCAS Schools Project Coordinator. Richard has been arranging workshops in primary and secondary schools in Leeds aimed at educating children on Africa, with a particular emphasis on challenging stereotypes about Africa.The workshops are given by African postgraduates from the University of Leeds.
