Race, genomics and mestizaje (mixture) in Latin America: A Comparative ApproachDate: 14 June 2011 Time: 13.00-17.00 Venue: FASS Meeting Room 3 Cesagen - LARC Seminar Tuesday 14th June 2011 Meeting Room 3 FASS Building, County South Race, Genomics and Mestizaje (mixture) in Latin America: A comparative approach > Presenters: Professor Peter Wade (Social Anthropology, University of Manchester) is renowned for his investigations on the themes of race and sexuality in Latin America. Amongst his many publications is the 2009 book on Race and Sex in Latin America (Pluto Press). María Fernanda Olarte Sierra is a Colombia Anthropologist; her doctoral research was on "Achieving the desirable nation. Antenatal testing and abortion in Colombia". Her research interests are in Science and Technology Dynamics, and Medical Anthropology. Vivette García Deister is an associated lecturer in History and Philosophy of Biology at UNAM, Mexico. Her doctoral research was on "Switches, batteries and networks: complexity management in gene regulation". Michael Kent is an anthropologist (University of Manchester). His doctoral research was primarily concerned with issues of ethnicity and politics, in particular with reinterpreting the relationship between the state and indigenous people in the Peruvian Andes (Lake Titicaca). Our presenters will discuss the way concepts of race, ethnicity and nation enter into recent genomic research about the ancestry of Latin American populations. They will examine how findings from such research are received and interpreted in the public domain. The presentations will include case studies from Colombia, Mexico and Brazil.
