Language, Gender and the Body Workshop

Date: 24 June 2011 Time: 10.00-16.00

Venue: John Welch Room

In April 2011, Charlotte Baker and Jane Sunderland submitted an application for funding to the British Academy International Partnership Scheme for a project 'Articulations of Gender and the Body'.Social practices surrounding 'the body' are often a source of controversy and pose a challenge for education practitioners across the globe. For example, what is, can or should be said about bodies which have been violated, or physically changed, which are pregnant or infertile, or which do not correspond to socially-preferred shapes? How do these articulations vary with and within different cultural contexts? These are driving questions behind the 'Articulations' project, which will explore discourse around gender and the body articulated by teachers in the UK, Cameroon and Nigeria. This one day workshop brings together interested colleagues forrelated talks and workshop activitiesto explore various aspects of the project.
