Languages NoWDate: 26 June 2012 Venue: University of Chester The Universities of Bolton, Central Lancashire, Chester, Edge Hill, Lancaster, Liverpool, Liverpool John Mores, Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan and Salford have recently formed the North West University Language Alliance (NWULA), with the support of the Regional Languages Network North West. The purpose of the group is to cooperate with regard to outreach work to schools focussed on general promotion of language learning to young people in the region. NWULA iscollaborating to provide some regionally focussed information for schools, particularly directed at Year 9 pupils. We arestaging events, entitled Language NoW! for Year 9 pupils. The first NWULA Languages NoW event took place at Chester University, the second one at Lancaster University in December 2007 with the last one taking place in July 2010 hosted by the University of Salford. The Languages NoW event will bea languages taster daywith small workshops including taster classes in new languages, practice in a language the pupils learn at schooland meeting university alumni to hear of their experiences with languages. There will also be a market place where pupils can enjoy different cultural activities ranging from Samba dancing to Calligraphy. Past events have had a positive impact on pupil's attitudes and interests towards language learning. - 78% of pupils said that their views about learning languages improved after attending the event. - 68% said that they were certain or lekely to study languages at GCSE - 88% of teachers declared to have found the day very enjoyable - 76% of teachers thought that the event has enriched pupils' views on languages Contact: Who can attend: Anyone
