HIJOS Mexico - DELC and Dynamics of Memory EventDate: 8 May 2012 Time: 4.00 pm Venue: Bowland North Seminar Room 25 No olvidamos. No perdonamos. No nos reconciliamos. We do not forget. We do not forgive. We do not reconcile. H.I.J.O.S. México Reclaim Public Space for Memory and against Impunity Pável Ramírez, H.I.J.O.S. México A collaboration of the Department of European Languages and Cultures and Dynamics of Memory The dirty wars during the dictatorships of the Southern Cone are well-known, but it is less well-known that the Mexican government during the 1970s also waged a dirty war against those who opposed the regime. H.I.J.O.S. is the organization of the children of those who were 'disappeared', asssassinated, imprisoned or exiled. The organisation exists in many European and Latin American countries. H.I.J.O.S. are proud of their parents' struggle for a different world and a better future. The organisation fights against impunity and forgetting by recuperating public space through the occupation of public space, for example in the escraches which publicly denounce repressors, through the changing of street names, and through other publicly visible actions. Before Pável Ramírez' talk about H.I.J.O.S. México, Dr. Cornelia Graebner from DELC will give a short overview of the context of the Mexican dirty war in the 1970s and on impunity in Mexico. Both talks will be in English. Event website: http://hijosmexico.org Contact: Who can attend: Anyone
