European Year of Remembrance 2014 - taster day for sixth form students of modern languages, European Languages and Cultures

This taster day is an opportunity for Sixth Form students (AS and A2 level) in French, German, Italian and Spanish to come to our university languages department and experience culture as it is taught on an undergraduate course. A poster competition will enable the students to participate actively and develop their thoughts on memory and history in different cultural contexts. Students will also have the opportunity to tour the exhibition "Dictatorship and Democracy in the Age of Extremes" kindly borrowed from the Institute for German Studies University of Birmingham. This exhibition is organized by the Institute for Contemporary History, Deutschlandradio Kultur and the Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship, hosted by the German Foreign Office.

2014 is a year of commemoration of European history and culture, from the 100th anniversary of World War 1 (1914) to the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall (1989), and beyond. Thus, the year 2014 symbolises a development from war to peace amongst the European nations. However, the period of time between 1914 and 1989 also encompasses many other events, some of them smaller and some of more importance, in Europe and its transnational history. In this context knowing a foreign language can be essential. Studying a language not only helps to improve communication skills, but also provides us with a deeper understanding of other cultures. We think that this is the perfect time to compare how we commemorate events in different European countries and to explore what is still present in our memories.

Sixth Form students taking AS and A2 language courses are invited to this day. All schools can take part. The event is free.

12.30-14.00 - Presentation of the posters in front of the jury and prize-giving ceremony

Please state how many students will attend, and which type of seminar (French, German or Spanish) they wish to register for.

What is the poster competition?

In preparation for the day, students are invited to work in groups to design electronically one poster per school and then present their poster on the day. Students should use either MS Power Point or a web-based tool such as Prezi.

Imagine you are asked to participate in an exhibition in a museum. Choose AT LEAST 2 years and 2 events and explain on the poster why they are important to you and how they are still present in our collective memories (photos, pictures, small texts...)

The events don't have to represent macro-historic changes in world history, they can refer also to micro history and cultural history, e.g. 1989 is not only significant for the fall of the Berlin Wall, this year saw as well the first Love Parade taking place in Berlin on the Ku'Damm. At the time, the event was relatively small and revolutionary and henceforth until its tragic end in 2010 in Duisburg it had an important impact on Germany's music scene and political discussions.

You will then be asked to present your poster to the audience and a panel of DELC tutors, explaining your choices (max. 10 min). The posters can use the target language, English, or both. The presentation should be given in English.

There will be a prize for the best poster for each language!
