WHAT IS SLEEP AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?

Colin Espie is Professor of Sleep Medicine in the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neuroscience at the University of Oxford. He is the author of Overcoming Insomnia and Sleep Problems (2006) and co-editor of the Oxford Handbook of Sleep and Sleep Disorders (2012); he is also a co-founder of the behavioural medicine company Big Health, and one of the co-designers of the digital sleep-improvement programme Sleepio.  Professor Espie’s talk is the keynote lecture for Sleep Values, a Wellcome Trust-funded interdisciplinary symposium on debates about the value of human sleep.
