GREATER KUDU

Length : 1.95-2.45m. Height : Male 1-1.5m to shoulder. Weight : 190-315 kg; Female lighter.

Sexual maturity : 1-2 years. Mating season : Varies according to region and climate. <reg>Gestation</reg> : 240 days. No. of young : 1; rarely, 2.

The greater Kudu is an elusive browser that keeps cover for most of the day. Wary by nature, and with acute hearing, this antelope is an uncommon but magnificent sight.

Young kudus are fond of play, and will use a variety of objects. Females often throw twigs with their mouths, and males will take up, toss and catch broken branches with their horns.

Greater kudus have <reg>occasionally</reg> benefited from human things in some areas. Human water installations schemes have allowed to spread in places that were <reg>too</reg> dry. <NOTE desc="word missing in previous sentence">

Even though the greater kudu is a shy animal that readily bolts for cover, it has a habit of stopping after a short run and looking back. When the pursuer of the antelope is a hunter with a rifle, this habit could often prove fatal.

BAT-EARED FOX

<reg>Length</reg> : Head and body 46-66cm ; tail 23-34cm. Female slightly larger than male. <reg>Height</reg> 30-40cm at shoulder. <reg>Weight</reg>: 3-5.3kg.

Sexual maturity : 1-2 years. Mating season : Prior to rains. <reg>Gestation</reg> : 70 days. No. of young : 3-5.

The bat-eared fox is the most peculiar member of the dog family. As well as its enormous ears which are used to locate food, it possesses <reg>teeth</reg> that are quite unlike <reg>teeth</reg> of other foxes.

The bat-eared fox eats scorpions and swallows the poison sac and the sting with no ill-effects.

The bat-eared fox has very sensitive hearing and it can even hear prey underground. Its eyesight is not <sic>as good as good as </sic> its hearing and sometimes can only spot smaller mammals when they are moving.

The bat-eared fox is sometimes known as the long eared fox, the big eared fox, the black eared fox or Delandi's fox.

VERVET MONKEY

Height : 44-66cm. Weight : Male 4.5kg; female 3.3kg

Sexual maturity : 5 years in the wild, 2 years in captivity. Mating season : Variable. <reg>Gestation</reg> 163 days. No. of young : 1.

The vervet monkey lives in grassland south of the Sahara desert. It is mostly found close to a water source, where it sleeps at night in the safety of <reg>thorny</reg> trees, such as the acacia.

The vervet monkey lives in eastern and southern <NOTE desc="word missing?"> of the dry, dusty savannah lands of Africa. The vervet monkey is a member of a group of monkeys called the guenons. All guenons have long tails. When the fast moving vervet monkey runs along the ground it holds its tail high in the air.

A young vervet monkey <reg>doesn't</reg> only suck its mother's nipple for nourishment but also it sucks it for comfort and security when frightened or <reg>injured</reg>.

Monkeys increase the numbers of plants by eating the seeds whole. Then the seeds would drop out in the monkey's faeces and grow. This increases food supply for many wild species.
