BIRD EATING SPIDER
Among the largest of living spiders are the so-called bird eating spider of the family Theraphosidae. The largest, from the Amazon basin, can attain a length of 3.5 in. with a leg span of 10 in. They are sometimes referred to as tarantulas, but the true tarantula is a wolf spider from Southern Europe.
(Figure 1). The fangs of the bird eating spider are sharply pointed and hollow. As soon as the prey has been caught and stabbed, a fluid is passed down the hollow fang. It is not clear whether this fluid is a poison or merely the first of a series of injections of digestive juices.
(Figure 2). The bird eating spider has few enemies, largely it is assumed, because of the irritant nature of its hairs. the main and probably only <reg>effective</reg> enemy of this spider is the hunting wasp whose sting paralyses it.
