Physical description for
Denise Svoboda's project on "Fresh Water Fish" (DS51)

Key to terms used in physical descriptions

General comments

The project is contained between two pieces of purple card, in a plastic folder (white plastic back and side, transparent front), and held together by a plastic gripper down the side. Unless otherwise stated below, all paper is plain white A4; all writing (including words, numbers, symbols except for page numbers) wordprocessed and printed out; all page numbers in fine black fibretip. The first page of each section has a divider tag attached to the right hand side of the page, positioned so that it can be read vertically and so that most of the tags are visible when the folder is closed. The tags are all wordprocessed, printed on white paper, cut out and attached with sellotape to the side of the page, but their size and shape and the precise method used to attach them varies between pages

cover page [ next page ] [ top ] [ DS51 index ] (Cover page)

Surface: purple card (visible through transparent plastic file cover); words: title and labels: wordprocessed (note choice of two different fonts) and printed on white paper, frames outlined and cut out carefully (ruled pencil lines partially visible around edges used for guidance) and stuck on firmly with glue; author's name: fine black fibretip directly onto purple card; picture: shape of fish drawn and cut out carefully, from green card (pencil lines of draft partially visible under features of fish and around the edge indicate lines used for guidance), and stuck on firmly with glue (note, some fibretip marks extend onto purple card, indicating that they were completed after green card shape had been stuck onto the purple sheet); arrows: fine fibretip; faint pencil lines under, or to the side of the final version indicate careful drafting, and changes of decision regarding positioning of arrows, (note: pencil lines do not extend onto purple card, indicating pencil drafting was completed before the green card shape was cut out and stuck on; fibretip lines extend onto purple card indicating that they were completed later, after the card had been cut out and stuck on).

page 1 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ DS51 index ]

Surface: lower half of page consists of 3 layers of paper, positioned on top of main sheet (total 4 layers) so that top edges of the overlayed sheets are visible across the centre of the page; the first layer covers (ie serves to obscure) two numbers written on the main sheet (possibly an earlier draft; or possibly not directly related to this project); the second layer contains a draft version of the contents list; the third layer covers this draft (the draft is faintly visible through it), and forms the surface for the final version; picture (drawing): pencil (faint pencil lines beneath final version indicate careful drafting); lines (of contents list): broken lines of biro; each line in a single colour: purple, pink or turquoise (not a mixture of colours as it comes out on the scan) words: note choice of 3 different fonts

page 2 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ DS51 index ]

Divider tag: positioned so that the page overlaps the tag slightly; the tag is stuck with sellotape to the side of the page, with the sellotape almost completely covering the front of the tag, and stuck with glue at the back, so that it is secured quite firmly, and feels quite solid; picture (drawing): outlined in pencil and black crayon, coloured in with crayon (note different strengths of tone in each of the two slightly different shades of green, indicating lighter or heavier strokes, ), on white paper, cut out and stuck on with glue (ruled red biro marks partially visible around the edge indicate careful cutting, using lines for guidance); underlining: word 'barbels' and 'foot' symbol: 2 layers: fine green fibretip line ruled over wordprocessed line; words 'abbreviations' and 'depth': single ruled line of fine green fibretip (suggests that the decision to include these words in the glossary may have been made at a later stage)

words: note choice of two different fonts

page 3 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ DS51 index ]

Divider tag: positioned in the same way as p2 but it is not glued at the back, so is less firmly secured; Pictures: catfish section (drawing): pencil outline, coloured in lightly with crayon; sturgeon section (drawing): black crayon; perch section (drawing): grey, black and green crayon (note: these drawings seem to have been fitted into the available space, to fill the gaps around the wordprocessed text (rather than the gaps being intentionally left for them) the space available governing the size and position of the drawings); carp section (photo): cut out from glossy magazine (a German publication? -writing in German(?) on the back) and stuck on loosely with glue, (it extends slightly over edge of page which suggests that, like the drawings, it was selected later to fit into available space, around wordprocessed text); computer graphics (a file, a pen and a downwards pointing hand): coloured in with fine fibretip

Underlining: some words (ie those listed later in glossary): barbels, continent, equator, habitat, invertibrate, algae, distribution, speciality, yield, marine: underlined in fine purple fibretip; other words underlined on wordprocessor; words: note choice of 3 different fonts

page 4 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ DS51 index ]

pictures (drawings): pike section: outlined (heavily) and coloured in with the same coloured crayon; salmon and trout sections: crayon (includes wavy lines of white crayon); paddlefish section: outlined (very lightly) and coloured in with 2 different coloured crayons (note contrast between strokes: straight, circular, wavy; heavy, light; also, as on p3, drawings appear to have been made to fit into the available space around the wordprocessed text (rather than gaps being left intentionally for them) the space available governing the size and position of the drawings) Underlining: some words: weirs, species, viceversa, order, spatula, tributaries, underlined in fine blue fibretip; other words underlined on wordprocessor.

page 5 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ DS51 index ]

Surface: two sheets of white A4 paper stuck together with glue (fairly firmly but a bit loose at the top and bottom); the child has done the painting on a piece of scrap paper (on the other side, partially visible through the painted side, is a word processed text; if we look between the sheets we can see that it is an academic text produced by her mother, in connection with our research on this project!); the sheet that it is stuck onto is plain and appears to have been previously unused; words, numbers: wordprocessed and printed out on white paper (ink appears fainter than on other pages suggesting either ink was running low or a different machine was used), then cut out carefully and stuck on fairly firmly with glue (ruled fibretip lines partially visible, frame the words and indicate their use for guidance during cutting out); underlining: some words: larvae, crustaceans, interbreeding, hybrids, molluscs, shellfish, exceptionally, region, vary, twined, tinged, dark bars: underlined in orange fibretip, other underlining is wordprocessed; picture (painting): outlined and coloured in with watercolour (note different thicknesses of paint: background, very thin and watered down; outline and stripes, a thicker consistency); pencil line around the eye(?), blob of white substance (paint or tippex?) in top right of eye; lighter , drier outline partially visible beneath the lower body indicates some drafting (note, paint extends under the written sections, indicating that the painting was completed before the written bits which were then added, carefully positioned around the painting; there are creases on the page, suggesting that the sheets of paper may have been stuck together while the paint was still wet).

page 6 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ DS51 index ]

picture (photo) cut out of glossy magazine (see comments on p3), positioned in available space and stuck firmly in place (note: large space available indicates gap was left intentionally for this purpose; contrasts with pages 3 and 4); words: (name of fish only) handwritten in fine purple fibretip; underlining: some words (detritus, bred, obtained, English bloodstock racing horses, tame, household scraps, pellets, nutrients, stressed, vulnerable, seiving) underlined in fine red fibretip (other underlining is wordprocessed); words: note choice of two different fonts

page 7 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ DS51 index ]

picture (drawing/painting): owl: outlined and coloured in with crayon; fish, water: outline and features in pencil and watercolour crayon (pencil lines beneath watercolour indicate rough drafting in light, loose strokes); washed over with water; greenery: watercolour crayon, washed over with water; (surface of paper is slightly crumpled and creased, suggesting that it became very wet during process of production) underlining: one word: smolt, underlined in bright pink fibretip; words: note choice of 2 different fonts

page 8 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ DS51 index ]

words: small neat blob of tippex beneath letter 'A' in 'pathetic', with letter 'A' in biro on top of tippex (indicates careful alteration to final draft after printing out, quite possibly after completion of the picture, when it would be too late to reprint it); picture (drawing): fibretip (faint pencil lines (very light stroke) beneath dog, water, fish, chairs, table and objects on table, indicate rough drafting and suggest that the idea of including other features (eg stones, water weeds and grass) may have come later); underlining: words: 'victims' and 'considerable' underlined in fine bright pink fibretip

page 9 and 9A (reverse of 9) [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ DS51 index ]

Surface: pale green A4 card; divider tag: positioned adjacent to the side of the page, and stuck with sellotape across the front, this makes it seem less firmly secured than the ones on pages 2 and 3, and because of the tag's position and because it is slightly wider than the previous two, the sellotape only covers half of it, so it feels less solid; the sellotape is partly hidden beneath a cut out picture, indicating that the tag was attached before the pictures were stuck on to the page. Surface: pale green A4 card; words: title: fine fibretip (a different colour for each letter); divider tag: attached loosely to side (with short piece of sellotape, same length as tag), side of tag positioned adjacent to edge of page; type of fish (koi): word processed and printed on white paper, cut out and positioned carefully, stuck on firmly with glue (overlaps paint, indicating that this was done later, after the names of the individual fish had been completed) ; names of different types of koi: turquoise fibretip; most framed in green paint, three at bottom (including one hidden under picture) framed in green fibretip (writing in fibretip, visible beneath the paint in two places, indicate that the squiggly lines of paint were used to hide mistakes and corrections in earlier draft; also, the paint continues over the sellotape, in some places, indicating that the pictures were stuck on first and the paint added later); pictures: computer graphic: top left, printed on white paper, cut out, carefully positioned and stuck down firmly; photos: cut out of glossy magazine (see notes on p3) and stuck on loosely with small pieces of sellotape (some are only secured by two pieces, others by a single piece of sellotape (this enables the reader to lift up the paper and see the photo (of another fish) on the reverse side, also the name of the fish written on the green card, both normally hidden beneath the picture); underlining: made up of short lengths of different coloured fibretip (as in the letters of the title)

Note: on reverse side, top left: paint marks suggest that the child has used this page to try to mix the right colour

page 10 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ DS51 index ]

Computer generated page (CD Rom plus word processing)

page 11 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ DS51 index ]

Words and picture (drawing): outlined and coloured in with fine fibretip (note difference in pressure and movement: heavy, straight strokes, and light wavy strokes)

page 12 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ DS51 index ]

Surface; plain cream coloured A4 card; pictures: 4 photos (postcards), stuck onto card with a piece of folded sellotape positioned at the centre on the reverse side of each postcard, and attached to each other at the centre of the page, at the point where the corners of the postcards meet, with a small piece of sellotape; words: handwritten in fine purple fibretip on the sticky backed part of one or more yellow 'post-its', cut to size, positioned and stuck onto the postcards (the 'perch' label is stuck over the sellotape at the centre, indicating that the cards were attached to the page before the labels were stuck on).

Note:

(i) weight and fragility: the whole page feels rather heavily loaded, a bit floppy and not too firmly held together

(ii)evidence of accidental damage: the surfaces of all the postcards except the carp are marked; liquid of some sort appears to have been spilled (splattered) over them; the postcards of the bream and the perch appear generally slightly more 'worn' than the other two

page 13 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ DS51 index ]

Dividing tag: as p4, but attached with a shorter piece of sellotape, so less firmly secured; question marks: top one: outlined and coloured in with pastel crayon; lower one: outlined and coloured in with fine fibretip; picture (drawing); fine fibretip; underlining: words: 'cling' and 'period' underlined in fine yellow fibretip; Words: note choice of two different fonts

page 14 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ DS51 index ]

Dividing tag: as for page 13; words: 'prehistoric fish' wordprocessed (in different fonts) and printed on white paper, cut out ('prehistoric' into individual letters (square shapes) and 'fish' into a single (triangular) shape) positioned and stuck on to a strip of white paper, using two slightly overlapping strips of sellotape which completely cover the strip of paper which is then stuck onto the main surface using a piece of sellotape at the left side, and glue (?) underneath; pictures: big fish: lightly, partially outlined in pencil, coloured in and teeth added in fibretip; little fish: outlined in fibretip, coloured in with crayon; sea: fibretip (note contrast between light wavy strokes of sea, heavy, straighter but sketchy strokes of big fish, and softer, more intense work on little fish)

Surface: the page is quite crumpled (indicating that it has perhaps been handled more than some of the other pages);

page 15 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ DS51 index ] (?)

1Dividing tag: as for p 13 but a shorter piece of sellotape, making it less securely attached; Map: computer generated (CD Rom); words: title, label, caption below map: computer generated: (CD Rom/word processor?); key (names of fish): wordprocessed on white paper, each word cut out, then positioned carefully and stuck together and onto surface with several wide strips of sellotape (two fairly long continuous strips along the whole length of the group of words, and two short pieces at each end), all the words, except for those along the bottom row are completely covered in sellotape; words are also stuck with glue to the surface, in a few places; key (names of countries): handwritten in fine fibretip; faint marks of straight, ruled, carefully erased pencil lines visible around the words and under some of the letters, indicate how lines were drawn for guidance ( to keep th letters straight, and each word in a neatly shaped block); key at bottom of page: word processed, cut out (all words on the one piece of paper) and stuck on firmly with glue; colour key: names of fish: blobs and lines of fine fibretip over the sellotape, and on paper, in places along the bottom where it is not covered in sellotape (indicating that words were stuck on before the colour symbols were added); some words have more colour blobs than others (see note above) so the key looks very crowded in places (again, this shows that the colour blobs were added later, positioned in the very limited space available); names of countries: thicker fibretip (colours representing Europe and South America appear to consist of a mixture (layers) of different colours); colour key at bottom of page: fine fibretip.

page 16 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ DS51 index ] (child's p 15A)

surface: paper cut to size, slightly narrower than A4 (A4 length, but approx 1" less than A4 in width) and enclosed in transparent plastic sleeve; dividing tag: attached to front of plastic sleeve with short piece of sellotape (which overlaps the tag slightly less than the plastic), fairly bent and creased, showing signs of wear; leaflet: positioned below words in available space on wordprocessed sheet; words: were these carefully positioned, when wordprocessing, to allow space for leaflet?

page 17 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ DS51 index ] (child's p16)

Dividing tag; positioned at top of page, so that page overlaps the tag slightly (as on p2), attached with two small pieces of sellotape, one at the front (very loose, seems to have lost its stickiness) and one at the back (was this added because the one at the front was loose?); pictures: drawings, outlined and coloured in with crayon

page 18 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ DS51 index ] (child's p 17)

Dividing tag: attached as on p4; words and numbers (ie handwritten bits): black fibretip (thicker than on previous pages); pictures (drawings): outlined and coloured in with crayon.

page 19 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ DS51 index ] (child's p18)

Dividing tag: postitioned with slight gap between page and side of tag; sellotape covers most of tag, tag bent at side where there isn't any sellotape;

page 20 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ DS51 index ] (child's p19)

Dividing tag: positioned adjacent to side of page, atached with short piece of sellotape positioned at an angle, covering about half the tag; page number: appears to be in fine blue fibretip, slightly smudged (as if something has lightly brushed over it from left to right) ; blobs of tippex beneath each separate digit indicates alteration to earlier draft (tippex follows shape of number, indicating that the earlier draft had been given the page number 20; held up to the light the word processed number 20 is visible); words (ie names of continents): handwritten in fine black fibretip; pictures (hand drawn): fine fibretip; other marks/lines: little squiggly lines positioned at either side of wordprocessed words: fine fibretip (red on left, purple on right); straight lines up centre of page: two very faint, ruled, mostly erased pencil line (this suggests that the lines were intended for guidance, and perhaps the child had originally intended to use the other side of the page for the rest of the list of glossary items, then realised that the space available was not enough to complete the glossary on the one sheet, or possibly that she didn't know how to print it all out on one sheet? )

page 21 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ DS51 index ] (child's page -unnumbered)

Surface: two sheets of paper, main sheet (A4) with second sheet (A4 length, cut to size: slightly narrower than half an A4 sheet in width) stuck (firmly, with glue, except for bottom left corner which is loose) onto right side of main sheet. (This suggests either that the child had not known how to arrange the words in columns on the wordprocesser, or that this was a less time consuming method for her to use); pictures/lines: fibretip (squiggly lines ctd as on p20)

page 22 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ DS51 index ] (child's page 20)

Page number: fine blue fibretip; neat blobs of tippex beneath number (as on p20) indicate alteration to earlier draft (tippex follows line of numbers, suggesting that in the earlier draft the page had been number19; held up to the light the wordprocessed number 19 is clearly visible); this suggests that the index was written before the glossary, and either that the child had originally intended to include the index before the glossary, or that she had forgotten about the glossary; dividing tag: smaller than the others, positioned adjacent to side of page; sellotape positioned so that it could be folded over the top of the tag before being stuck down.

page 23 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ DS51 index ] (child's page 21)

page number: fine blue fibretip (the fact that it is not wordprocessed suggests either that the child forgot to add the page number, or perhaps that the page was completed at an earlier stage, before she knew how many pages there would be); dividing tag: attached with small very crumpled piece of sellotape, but tag itself is only slightly bent (suggests act of sticking on sellotape was a bit awkward, but the tag itself hasn't been handled much.)
