Key to terms used in physical descriptions
The project is contained in a bright orange plastic ('woven' textured surface) A4 ringbinder. Unless otherwise stated, pages consist of plain A4 sheets enclosed within transparent plastic sleeves (2 sheets per sleeve); written and drawn by hand, writing in fine fibretip and drawings outlined in pencil and coloured in with crayon.
On all pages of 'continous writing', the child has ruled lines in pencil across the page, for guidance when writing; these have been erased but are still visible, indicating in some cases that the child ruled more lines than he actually used; also evenly spaced markings down right hand side of page continue down to bottom, indicating where more lines would have been drawn across if necessary
cover page [ next page ] [ top ] [ ER51 index ] Cover page:
drawing (wavy lines): thick fibretip directly onto plastic file (note: the black wiggly lines continue over the back cover as well); writing: title: thick black fibretip; author: fine black fibretip on white selfadhesive label; also, author and title in fine fibretip on white card inserted in transparent slot on spine.

Surface: note bottom of page is slightly torn (suggesting perhaps that it might have been torn while being removed from a pad); Words and underlining: outlined in pencil, coloured in with crayon (faint erased pencil lines visible beneath word 'Tiger' indicating alteration to earlier draft: 'Tigers'); picture: handdrawn, outline in pencil, coloured in with crayon (note: line drawn in pencil across bottom of page -was it drawn before the rest of the picture, for guidance?)
page 2 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER51 index ]
Lines of contents list: ruled (note: this contrasts with underlining (under title) which is not ruled; also above the word 'birth' a narrow strip of tippex (quite thickly applied and slightly smudged) runs from left side to centre of page indicating alteration (removal of two unruled lines) to earlier draft)
page 3 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER51 index ]
Words: strip of tippex beneath words 'which the tiger hunts' (line 8) indicates alteration to earlier draft; underlining: ruled; lines across the page: erased pencil lines visible indicating that 3 more lines were ruled than used
page 4 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER51 index ]
Words: tippex beneath 'can never be' (line 9) indicates alteration to earlier draft
page 5 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER51 index ]
Words: tippex beneath 'terai' (line 7) and 'can't get' (penultimate line) indicates alterations to earlier draft; lines across page: one extra unused line was drawn; two erased strokes are visible, indicating that the child made two attempts at this.
page 6 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER51 index ]
Imported material (map): photocopy; areas of orange and grey have been added by the child; other lines are in original photocopy. Words: pencil is visible beneath fibretip in 'China', 'Sumatra', 'Bali', and 'Caspian Sea', but not beneath other words; Arrows: ruled; faint, erased arrow pointing from word Bali to island of Java indicates alteration ( correction) to earlier draft (note difference between firm, heavy stroke used in arrows, and lighter stroke used in colouring); Colour Key: blocks of colour are not outlined; at very bottom of page, on left, are two areas of tippex: each covering a circle containing words (all in fibretip) indicating alteration to earlier draft.
page 7 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER51 index ]
Writing: tippex covers the words 'the spikes interfere' (line 5) and 'as well' (penultimate line) indicating alteration to earlier draft (the alteration is in a different shade of blue/black; note: a circle in pencil around part of the later version of the word 'interfere' (over the ink and tippex) appears to draw attention to area of spelling mistake (was this mark made by child or teacher or someone else?)
page 8 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER51 index ]
Writing: a tiny spot of tippex to left of second letter 'r' in 'preferably' (line 4), and beneath letter 'a' in 'roars'(line 8) indicate alteration to earlier draft; a circle, erased, but faintly visible, in pencil, around the word 'roars' suggests proofing of earlier draft, indicating area for alteration; below the last line of writing the word 'roars' has been written in pencil and then erased (presumably after copying; -the letters are clearly formed and not joined up, unlike the rest of the child's text; who wrote it?) .
page 9 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER51 index ]
Writing: tippex beneath second letter 'a' in word camflage (line 1), between 'd' and 'u' in 'individuals' (line 8), immediately before word 'beautiful' (line 9) and beneath letters 'ecu' in 'persecution' (last line) indicates alteration to earlier draft; below the word 'persecution' the same word has been written in pencil and then erased (presumably after copying; -the letters are clearly formed and not joined up, unlike the rest of the child's text; who wrote it?) . Underlining: ruled.
page 10 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER51 index ]
Writing: tippex beneath word 'males' (line 2) indicates alteration to earlier draft; erased but faintly visible circle in pencil around word indicates proofing of earlier draft, showing area for alteration.
page 11 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER51 index ]
Writing: tippex beneath letters 'cia' of 'essential' (line 10) (smudged) indicates alteration to earlier draft; erased but faintly visible circle in pencil around second half of word indicates proofing of earlier draft, showing area for alteration; below the last line of writing, the word 'essential' has been written in pencil, and erased (presumably after being copied; -the letters are clearly formed and not joined up, unlike the rest of the child's text; who wrote it?)
page 12 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER51 index ]
Writing: tippex beneath words 'they are' (line 3) (smudged) indicates alteration to earlier draft; erased but faintly visible version of same words in pencil above word indicates proofing of earlier draft, showing precise type of alteration to be made.
page 13 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER51 index ]
Writing: tippex beneath words 'release-' (line 6) and letters 'ita' in 'vitamins' (line 12) indicates alteration to earlier draft
page 14 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER51 index ]
Lines of table: pencil lines (erased) beneath fibretip indicate drafting (note erased line to left of the 'numbers' column indicates alteration to draft -repositioning of line) Writing: partially erased pencil lines beneath two of the headings ('characteristics' and 'numbers') indicate early drafting; tippex beneath second letter 'a' and letters 'er' in the word 'characteristics' indicates alteration to second draft (3 drafts visible here). In 5th box down, in 'characteristics' column there's a blob of tippex over the 'e' in 'were' (no apparent purpose -was this intentional or accidental?)
page 15 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER51 index ]
Writing: neat strip of tippex beneath word 'wasn't' (line5) indicates alteration to earlier draft; pencil marks visible under words in chart indicate earlier draft used for guidance (and in word 'NO', alteration to draft: diagonal of letter 'N'); underlining: ruled; lines of chart: left hand axis, pencil line, can be seen to continue about 1" up the page, but the excess length has been erased.
page 16 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER51 index ]
Lines of table: pencil; top line and line of left hand column: fine fibretip over the pencil. Drawing: top of tree is not outlined in pencil; (note:long, light, sweeping strokes of background compared to heavier shorter strokes in tiger, and circular movement in tree, also 'scratched' surface (horizontal lines in body of tiger) perhaps indicating use of crayon in need of sharpening).

Imported published materials: 2 newspaper cuttings and 1 cutting from a leaflet (slightly stiffer paper) held loosely, in transparent plastic sleeve. The square shaped picture is a larger cutting, first torn out from the top half of the page of the newspaper (straight across the middle of the page) then folded back along top, bottom and sides (around the edge of the picture and caption) so that the surrounding text is not visible. The other, larger rectangular cutting (cut out on 3 of the 4 sides ie top, and sides) is folded back (across the middle of the picture) to fit into the sleeve; when opened out the whole picture is visible. The smaller cutting is not folded; it is a side section of a small leaflet, cut roughly along the one side.
