Physical description for
Roberta Jowett's project on "Tiger and Lions" (RJ51)

Key to terms used in physical descriptions

General comments

The project was originally contained in a ring binder, but has since been taken apart and the ringbinder recycled. (This is in itself interesting as it tells us something about the life of component parts of the project after completion). Not all of the original pages were returned to us for scanning but fortunately we have black and white photocopies of those that are no longer available. The notes below refer to those original pages which were returned, enclosed in a single plastic sleeve. They are described in the order in which they have been numbered for scanning, but this is not necessarily the sequence in which they originally appeared. The work has been done on different types of paper, but mostly fairly thin, plain white A4, with holes punched by child; most of the holes are torn, indicating general wear and tear. Drawing and writing is mostly by hand, using a range of materials.

Comments on individual pages

cover page [ next page ] [ top ] [ RJ51 index ] (cover?).

This is a photocopy of the original page, which unfortunately was lost before it could be scanned.

Half an A4 sheet, cut widthways.

page 1 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RJ51 index ]

Surface: holes punched above picture, both torn, one on right is completley torn through. (note: red mark to left of lion appears to been caused by contact with the sheet below; a drop of liquid (probably water) fell on the red and orange fibretip section of the picture on p2, causing it to run; it then came into contact with the reverse side of p1; also note fold across centre indicating page was folded at some point). Drawing (of lion): outlined and carefully in pencil, coloured in with fairly dry yellow fibretip (indicates pen was running out), faint pencil lines (indicating alteration to earlier draft) visible above eyes of lioness, light pencil stroke except for eyes of lioness (final version relatively heavily worked) ; words in pencil.

page 2 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RJ51 index ]

Surface: paper slightly shorter than A4; holes punched all the way down right hand side, two holes punched on left for insertion in file, torn through (note line of fold across centre of page indicating that the page has been folded at some point); words: fibretip (check on tape) on round shape of tiger's tongue, cut out from a separate piece of paper and attached to the tiger's body with a hand made paper 'spring' -this is a concertinered strip, very carefully constructed from the side of a sheet of paper with holes punched all the way down it and glued at each end; imported material: photo: cut out from magazine/newspaper (thin, matt paper, not glossy); drawing: features outlined in pencil; coloured in with fibretip (?) Note: smudge to left of nose, due to liquid being dropped on surface of paper.

page 3 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RJ51 index ]

Surface: lined filepaper; writing: blue biro; corrections: biro ('flicks')and neat, thinly applied blob of tippex beneath letter 'T' of 'tiger' (line 16) indicating alteration to earlier draft; line across centre: ruled in biro.

page 4 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RJ51 index ]

This is reverse of page 3) Surface: lined filepaper; writing: blue biro; corrections: biro ('away') and tippex, thinly applied in one continuous area beneath letters 'ch' of 'watch' and 'a' of 'and' (line 20) indicating alteration to earlier draft.

page 5 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RJ51 index ]

Writing: typed; thin layer of tippex beneath heading 'LIONS' indicates alteration to earlier draft, final version is typed over the tippex (note: held up to light, old version is visible, indicating problem to be a technical one to do with use of the typewriter: the letter 's' is repeated 4 times, and also appears once above and once below the line, as if the lower and upper case keys have stuck together (this suggests the use of an old fashioned, manual typewriter); also, bottom left, erased pencil lines of words 'A new' are faintly visible, with a thin layer of tippex over the letter 'A', indicating alteration to earlier draft; at very end, there are small blobs of tippex (over two full stops).

page 6 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RJ51 index ]

This is the reverse of page 5. Writing: typed; tippex beneath word 'sisters' and preceding comma (line 1), and two small blobs of tippex at very end (over two full stops), indicate alterations to earlier draft.

page 7 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RJ51 index ]

Writing: typed. Words on following page (p8), in fibretip, are partly visible through the paper.

page 8 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RJ51 index ]

This is the reverse side of page 7. Writing: black fibretip.

page 9 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RJ51 index ]

Surface: lined sheet (school notebook size); holes punched across top and down right side, writing: blue biro, tippex beneath word 'Sonia' and another blob about 1' to right of this (indicating alteration to previous draft); line down centre: ruled in biro.

page 10 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RJ51 index ]

This is reverse side of page 9. Writing: blue biro; line down centre ruled in biro.

page 11 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RJ51 index ]

Surface: small slip of paper, torn from pad (along top) and cut out (along bottom and right hand sides), approx 4 3/4" x 3 1/2". Writing (and wavy lines): black fibretip (note: heavy stroke, dry pen, appears to be running out).

page 12 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RJ51 index ]

A single plastic sleeve containing imported materials, from an informant at Chester Zoo: a bookmark: 8 3/4" x 1 1/4", made of thin card (note: alteration (additional writing) by child: 'Save All' above word 'Wildlife' and 'that's' to left of word 'in', in pencil, indicating alteration to the syntax of the original, so that it carries a different message); also 3 colour leaflets, 3 black and white information sheets, and a letter.

page 13 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RJ51 index ]

Surface: crease of fold across centre, indicating that page has been folded in half at some point. Writing: words at top of page outlined in pencil, coloured in with crayon, letter 'I' has another 'I' contained within the larger one, crayoned in red beneath the final version (could be an earlier draft?), words at bottom: pencil; drawing: mostly pencil, but ‘tears’ (?) on face coloured in with crayon; frame (ie broken lines around words and drawing): pencil.

Set of completed question sheets: each is half an A4 sheet, cut widthways; the sheets are not all exactly the same size, suggesting that they were cut in batches, several sheets together; holes are punched above writing, for insertion in file. Ticks, and marks out of seven, are written in black fibretip pen, except for one sheet where the mark is in pencil. The production and use of these sheets appears to have involved a series of activities: questions typed (possibly twice on one sheet); sheets photocopied; sheets cut (guillotined) to size (in batches); sheets given to informants for completion; sheets returned to author; sheets marked (by hand); holes punched in sheets; and finally, sheets inserted in file.
