Physical description for
Ryan Appleby, Jim Johnson and Scott Jenkins' project on "Spiders" (XT51)

Key to terms used in physical descriptions

General comments

The project is contained in a plastic A4 ringbinder. Unless otherwise stated, paper is plain white A4, and pages single sided, with holes punched by child. The project is showing signs of wear and tear: holes are generally a bit torn and the pages rather crumpled.

Comments on individual pages

Surfaces: a sheet of plain white paper is stuck onto the plastic cover of the binder with long strips of sellotape along top and bottom and down each side (more than one strip on all except left side (2 along top and right, 3 along bottom - suggests initial strips not long enough), also strips extend beyond edge of sheet (particularly top right, where they have come loose), and one of strips along bottom curls up slightly along lower edge ); white self adhesive label stuck on at top of page. Words: title and author on self-adhesive label is in fine black fibretip; title on large sheet in pencil, first letter 'S' in layer of fibretip over the pencil (pencil visible beneath fibretip). Drawings: pencil (lines visible beneath (through) the sellotape indicate drawing completed before sheet was stuck on).

page 1 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ XT51 index ]

Words and drawing: pencil; partially erased pencil lines of words of earlier draft are clearly visible ('40 pages of spider fun') ; top right, evidence of earlier drafting: crossed out words on other side of paper (in black fibretip) are also visible (if the page is turned over the earlier message can be read: 'Introduction / welcome to our spiders project and I hope you enjoy it').

page 2 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ XT51 index ]

Surface: two sets of hole punched by child; sheet enclosed in transparent plastic sleeve. Words and numbers: fibretip; page number, title and top 3 lines of writing: pencil lines under fibretip indicate earlier drafting; underlining: pencil; drawings: spider on left: fibretip, spider at bottom: outlined in pencil and coloured in with fibretip, picture top right: pencil.

page 3 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ XT51 index ]

Surface: lined A4 filepaper; words and underlining: pencil

page 4 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ XT51 index ]

Surface: lined A4 filepaper; words: pencil / pencil under fibretip, tippex (small spot) to right of word 'wear' (line 7); page number and drawings: pencil.

page 5 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ XT51 index ]

Surface: lined A4 filepaper; chart (words, lines, ticks): blue biro

page 6 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ XT51 index ]

Page enclosed in transparent plastic sleeve; surface = imported material: CD Rom printout; words: typed using word processor

page 7 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ XT51 index ]

Surface: sheet is creased, indicating that it has been folded in half and diagonally across right hand corners; words: typed

page 8 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ XT51 index ]

Imported materials: photocopies of photos of spiders, cut out (quite roughly, along two sides), carefully positioned (top picture overlapping bottom one slightly) and stuck on (firmly) with glue; imported material: photocopied map: photocopy, cut out (carefully, corners cut diagonally) and stuck on firmly with glue; writing: intitials bottom right, in pencil; holes punched by child (after map stuck on), now torn through (so sheet is not secured at all).

page 9 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ XT51 index ]

Main surface = imported material: photocopied letter, brown stain, bottom left, suggests liquid (eg coffee) spilled at some stage (also bits of something (food?) higher up the page suggests it may have been handled over a meal - breakfast?), crease down centre indicates it was previously folded in half; imported material: compliment slip: stapled to main surface along bottom (this can be lifted up, revealing message from sender on other side, and enabling reader to read the photocopied letter); staple marks on the back of the main sheet show that the compliment sheet was initially positioned slightly higher, before being moved to its present position.

page 10 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ XT51 index ]

Surface: very crumpled; Words and numbers: Spiders Quiz: typed; answers along bottom: black biro.

page 11 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ XT51 index ]

Imported material: photocopy, very roughly cut out; 3 sets of holes punched in side indicate several attempts to position holes in right place.

page 12 [ previous page ] [ top ] [ XT51 index ]

Imported material: photocopy: very roughly cut out, hole punched (neatly) in side. Four more similar imported photocopied pages follow.
