Physical description for
Lorna Ashworth and Sian Varley's project on "Squirrels" (XU51)

Key to terms used in physical descriptions

General comments

The project is held together in a red cardboard ringbinder, bound in fabric effect paper (it appears to be quite worn, a bit scuffed around the edges and bent at the corners). Most pages consist of lined A4 filepaper, enclosed in transparent plastic sleeves. There are holes in the sides, some readymade and others punched by the child; they look very worn, indicating that the sheets were filed, and received a good deal of handling, before being placed in plastic sleeves. The writing is mostly in blue biro and most pages have scribbled out words or letters, indicating substantial alteration to previous drafts. Any exceptions are noted below.

Comments on individual pages

cover page [ next page ] [ top ] [ XU51 index ] (Cover)

Surface: thick, rough, plain pink A4 paper, stuck with glue onto cover of ring binder; the torn surface along the top and down the side of the pink paper suggests either previous use, intended alteration, or accidental damage. Words: the title is written in 2 layers: black fibretip and pencil (unclear which is beneath the other); author information is in biro on white selfadhesive label (curling up, coming unstuck at corners), and directly onto bottom of spine, widthways across, in fibretip; the words in fibretip on the file cover, beneath the pink paper, and also on the back of the pink paper and beneath the white label, indicate either earlier drafting or use for another purpose. Imported material (photo): card, cut out and stuck on with glue, not a clean cut edge, some creases in the photo, top left and bottom right corners heavily creased. Note: indented words over the surfaces of the photo and the pink paper indicate that the file has been used at some stage for supporting paper during writing. On the inside cover, a pink card divider is stuck with blutack; there are 2 sets of holes punched in the side; the centre two appear well worn, indicating previous use for another purpose.

Imported material (photocopy): altered (but not photocopied) by child: drawing is coloured in and partially outlined with crayon, cut out (not too neatly) and stuck on with glue all over back, firmly secured, but the picture’s surface is creased (note: if held up to the light, words on the back of the picture become visible suggesting that it was taken from a leaflet or information sheet about squirrels)

Words and underlining: blue fibretip; underlining is ruled and runs over the picture top left, which, along with the position of the words around the picture, indicates that the words and underlining were completed after the picture (top right) was stuck on. Drawing (bottom left): handdrawn on white paper, outlined in pencil and coloured in with fibretip, cut out and stuck on loosely with two large strips of sellotape, folded over beneath the picture so that they are not visible. Imported material: photocopy (top left) altered but not copied by child: coloured in with crayon, cut out and stuck on loosely with a piece of sellotape (folded over beneath the picture so that it isn't visible). Imported material (map): cut out of source text and stuck on with 4 pieces of sellotape, positioned diagonally (the top two lengthways across each corner, the bottom two widthways) folded over onto the reverse side of the paper and stuck down).

Between pages 8 and 9 there is a blank sheet of plain blue card; it is stuck down at all 4 corners (with blutack) onto page 9, obscuring the content. It is necessary to lift up the blue card to read the information beneath it. It is not clear whether the author intends the reader to do this. There are 4 sets of holes punched in the side, in various positions; only one set (those currently in use) appear to have been used; they are completely torn through to the edge, suggesting that they may have been used previously for another purpose.

Writing: compared to the other pages in this project, this one is unusual, in that it contains no scribbled alterations.

Writing: 'this' (line 7), pencil under biro; underlining: the line runs over the words in the second heading, reflecting a less controlled movement than the line above (is this intended to be a crossing out, or underlining?) Pictures: (map and skeleton): hand drawn in pencil, outline partially erased beneath biro, indicating slight alteration to earlier draft.

picture (diagram): hand drawn in blue biro. Note: a pink card divider is stuck (with bluetack at each corner) onto the back of p13; it has 3 sets of holes punched in side, one: top and bottom, unused, two in centre are in use and look fairly worn, two slightly above these appear very worn (top one has been torn through to the edge) indicating that perhaps they were used previously, for another purpose, and that the holes currently in use were punched later, after the set above them had ceased to function.

Writing: fibretip; picture: hand drawn, outlined in fibretip, coloured in with crayon.

page 15 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ XU51 index ]

Surface: small (7"x9") sheet of lined notepaper stuck with glue onto pale green A4 paper (note: two pairs of holes punched by child in side of green paper, two holes too high to be used, the other two very torn, indicating previous use). Drawing: fibretip (lines on green paper below drawing indicate that it was completed after the white sheet had been stuck on). Writing: unlike most of the pages in this project there are no scribbled alterations on this page. Note: a green card divider is stuck with bluetack onto the back of p15; there are 3 sets of holes punched in side but of the two currently in use, the upper one is torn right through; also note rough cut edge, and indented line along bottom, suggesting that the sheet may have been cut with a knife, after using a pointed implement to draw a line for guidance

Note: a yellow card divider is stuck with bluetack onto the back of page 19; 2 sets of holes, 2 currently in use, lower one of these torn right through.

Imported materials: (letter from informant): unaltered, except for holes punched by child; surface is a bit crumpled and dirty marks at bottom indicate a fair amount of handling.

page 21 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ XU51 index ]

Surface: the sheet is creased along the bottom, indicating some handling. Writing: fibretip. Imported materials (photos): card, cut from magazine (?picture on left has writing on back), and stuck on fairly securely with glue.

plastic sleeves containing 3 small sheets of paper (each 1/3 of A4 size) inserted loosely, not stuck together, but arranged carefully so that each is visible; the process appears to have involved the following sequence of activities: questions wordprocessed on A4 paper; sheet photocopied; sheet cut (using guillotine) into 3 small question forms; one form given to each informant; informants answer the set questions, writing answers (by hand, using pencil, fibretip, or biro) and return forms; forms positioned (3 per page) in transparent sleeves.
