Physical description for
Lisa Roberts' project on "Killer Whales" (LR51)

Key to terms used in physical descriptions

General comments

The project is contained in a thin, lightweight, plastic folder with a transparent front cover and brass clips. Unless otherwise stated, all paper is plain white A4, with holes punched down the side for filing. Front and back cover, and most internal pages are all slightly crumpled. A range of substances are used for writing and drawing.

Main surfaces: faded purple paper (type?) visible through transparent plastic folder; holes punched in side of paper for filing, top one torn right through; writing: title and author (i) words positioned vertically, written on strip of paper, in thick black fibretip, and inserted into slot down side of folder (ii) words positioned horizontally, written on purple paper in black crayon (pastel?); picture: outlined in pencil and coloured in with black wax (?) crayon, on white paper; cut out (fairly roughly) and stuck (fairly loosely) with glue to the purple paper, secured only at the centre and under the top fin, so that other parts of it remain loose. Note: If the plastic cover is turned over, the brass wings of the folder become visible; the lower one has sellotape wrapped around it (why -was it broken?) this may account for why the lower hole on most sheets is torn, since it is now difficult to fit the clip through the hole; also the edge of the 'purple' paper has been protected from the light and shows that the original colour was much more 'blue' (as is the reverse side of the page)

Surfaces: 2 layers: top (half size) sheet (containing drawing) attached to main (full size) sheet (containing writing); top sheet positioned about half an inch below top of lower sheet, and stuck with glue along top and sides (note: both sheets are a bit scruffy, with yellowy brown marks indicating that they may have been in contact with something sticky (glue? breakfast?); holes punched through both sheets of paper, and protection ring stuck on over lower hole. Picture: outlined and coloured in with thick black fibretip, on white paper, cut to a rectangular shape (A4 width, by approx 5 "), and stuck onto top half of main sheet; writing: typed (wordprocessed?) onto lower half of main sheet, with alteration in blue ink (fibretip?) to earlier draft; note broken underlining

page 2 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ LR51 index ]

Surface: top edge slightly scuffed and torn; writing: appears to be written in ink, using fountain or cartridge pen

page 3 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ LR51 index ]

Surface: 2 layers (as for p1): sheet containing picture, A4 width, half A4 length, positioned over top half of lower sheet and stuck on with glue (note: on reverse side, yellow marks suggest that glue (or some other substance found its way onto the paper). This page is particularly crumpled. drawing: black biro; writing: black biro and blue ink. Notes: (i) The black pen does not appear to have run out; this suggests that child stopped writing in the middle of the bottom line, and continued later with a different pen; also note alteration in blue ink made at this point to first draft (word 'makes' -letter 'y' changed to 'a'). (ii) Indented form of words and picture, on top sheet, indicate that a draft version of the diagram was produced before this final version, with this sheet of paper being part of the pad used for support.

page 4 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ LR51 index ]

Surfaces: 2 sheets of tracing paper, stuck onto A4 with glue in middle so that edges are not stuck down: one at bottom of page postioned slightly over and to the right of top one; writing on top sheet: biro; on bottom sheet: ink.

page 5 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ LR51 index ]

Surface: Green sheet (very crumpled) with strip cut off top making it slightly shorter than full A4 (note orange fibretip line, visible at some points along the top; what did this represent and why has the strip been cut off?) writing: words at top, ink; down side and at bottom, pencil except for one word ('whale') in pale blue fibre tip; numbers: pencil; chart: outlined in pencil, using ruler (but note slip of pen in second column), coloured in with fibretip (note:horizontal, vertical and diagonal strokes)

Surface: lined paper; writing: ink. Note: this page looks very clean and uncrumpled compared to the others, indicating that it was probably written later and / or has received less handling.
