General comments

The project is contained in a green, plastic (‘woven texture’ effect), A4 size ringbinder; it is in spotless condition, and looks new. It contains 16 pages. Almost all the work has been done on sheets of lined A4 notepaper which have been inserted in transparent plastic sleeves, back to back, two sheets per sleeve; some of the sheets are very slightly creased, but in general the project looks as if it has been handled carefully.

The work consists largely of pages of handwriting. Most of the writing is in blue ink; it looks like fine felt tip, or possibly cartridge pen. The only exception is the first page, where the title is outlined in crayon and coloured in with pencil crayon. Tippex has been used on most pages to make alterations to a few letters, words or phrases; some words have been crossed out; corrections are in ink. Alterations to page numbers indicate that some pages have been added later, resulting in slight resequencing.

There are some imported materials: newspaper cuttings, a photocopied map, and two photographs; most of these are stuck firmly onto the page with glue, but one cutting is inserted loosely in the plastic sleeve without a backing sheet.

Comments on individual pages

Spine:

The title and name of author are written in blue ink, in small, lower case, joined up writing, on a small piece of card, which has been inserted in the transparent pocket available for this purpose.

page 1 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER53 index ]

The author’s name has been written firstly in fairly large joined up writing, then below that, again, in very small capitals. A blob of tippex, four lines above the word ‘By’, covers up an earlier draft, indicating alteration to the position of this word (the word ‘By’ is visible from the reverse side). The outline of the underlining appears to have been ruled, but not that of the letters

page 2 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER53 index ]

A blob of tippex indicates alteration to the first page number in the contents list; earlier drafts are visible from the reverse side: first 1, then 2, and finally 3.

page 3 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER53 index ]

Two merged blobs of tippex indicate alteration to the page number; earlier drafts are visible through the reverse side: first 1, then 2 (crossed out), and finally 3. Blobs of tippex after the words ‘huge’ and ‘sticks’ indicate removal of letter and puctuation (details unclear); a strip beneath the words ‘year,by’ indicates alteration to the wording (the earlier draft has been crossed out and the words are not clearly visible).

page 4 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER53 index ]

A blob of tippex indicates alteration to the page number; earlier drafts are visible from the reverse side: first 1, then 2, possibly 3 (not clear), and finally 4. Many small blobs of tippex indicate alterations to or removal of letters and words in earlier draft, previously crossed out; details not clearly visible. A missing word has been added in biro (‘like’).

page 5 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER53 index ]

A blob of tippex indicates alteration to the page number; the earlier draft (3)is visible through the tippex. There are some alterations in biro: the letter ‘s’ added to the word ‘wing’ and the word ‘fly’ crossed out and replaced with ‘glide’. A word has been removed with tippex, and replaced with ‘Talons’; the word ‘the’ has been removed before the word ‘branches’ (it is visible from the reverse side).

page 6 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER53 index ]

This page is unusual in that corrections are done just in ink; there is no use of tippex. The page number appears to have been changed (from a 5 to a 6).

page 7 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER53 index ]

A blob of tippex indicates alteration to the page number; the earlier draft (4) is visible from the reverse side. Several small blobs of tippex indicate removal of words (original draft unclear) and the letter ‘f’ has been removed from the word ‘off’, indicating a correction to the spelling (line 12). A line drawn in biro (to show where a section of text should be moved and inserted) is still partly visible under the tippex; the insertion symbol ‘v’ (also in biro) has not been removed.

page 8 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER53 index ]

A blob of tippex indicates alteration to the page number; the earlier draft (5) is visible from the reverse side. A word and phrase have been removed and replaced; the earlier draft is not clearly visible.

page 9 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER53 index ]

A blob of tippex indicates alteration to the page number; the earlier draft (6) is visible from the reverse side. Corrections to the wording are done just in ink, there is no use of tippex.

page 10 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER53 index ]

A blob of tippex indicates alteration to the page number; the earlier draft is not clearly visible, but looks as if it could have been a ‘7’. Some words have been crossed out and removed using tippex; the previous draft is unclear. In addition, the last three lines have been written on a narrow (approx 1.5") strip of notepaper which has been cut out and glued across the page, positioned over the bottom two lines of the first draft. The earlier version has been crossed out, except for the words ‘and DDT is banned’ which are still faintly visible through the paper, and point to paraphrasing in the final version.

page 11 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER53 index ]

A blob of tippex (top left) indicates alteration to the page number (previously 8) and to its position. Corrections to the wording are done just in ink, there is no use of tippex.

This page contains imported materials : a newspaper cutting (a reference to the source and date of publication has been written on the back - visible from the other side of the page); and a photocopy of a map, with information added by the child. The map is an A4 photocopy which has been folded back at the top (about ½"inch), the bottom (about 3") and the left side (about 2"), before being attached. Fluorescent yellow felt tip has been used to highlight a road on the map, and blue felt tip to indicate a path; the words ‘eagle area’ have been written, and circled, in pencil. There are short lines in pencil on the paper below and to the right side of the newspaper cutting, and similar ruled lines at each side of the map, which look as if they were drawn to provide markers for positioning the imported texts, which were then stuck down firmly with glue. The writing has been carefully positioned to fit into the alloted space, between the imported materials (but a few words don’t quite fit in; they extend into the margin). There are two corrections: a blob of tippex (top right) indicates alteration to the page number (previously 9); another blob at the end of the third line has been used to remove a few letters (the earlier draft is faintly visible through the paper from the other side - looks like ‘ANA’).

page 13 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER53 index ]

A blob of tippex (top left) indicates alteration to the page number (previously 10) and to its position. The page contains imported material: photographs (printed on good quality, glossy paper) glued fairly firmly to the page. Some letters and words have been removed, using tippex; the earlier draft is unclear. There is blue ink around the top hole in the side of the paper; it looks like some kind of ‘doodling’.

page 14 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER53 index ]

The grid of the wordsearch is ruled in pencil. Various words and phrases have been removed using tippex; the earlier draft is unclear; there is some smudging of tippex and ink.

page 15 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER53 index ]

A blob of tippex (top left) indicates alteration to the page number (previously 12) and a slight change to its position. The grid of the wordsearch is ruled in pencil, but it appears incomplete, with only the vertical lines drawn in There are two tippex alterations to the Quiz; ‘DDT’ was positioned next to point 3 in the previous draft. This sleeve contains only one sheet of paper; the other side is blank.

page 16 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ER53 index ]

This page contains imported material: a newspaper cutting; it has been cut out, along the left and bottom, then folded along the left side (about 2") and right side (about ½"), so that it fits into the plastic sleeve. It has been thoughtfully folded to ensure minimal loss of content.
