The project is contained in a red plastic ringbinder; it is a bit bent and scuffed, suggesting it may have been used before. Inside the binder, the pages consist mostly of sheets of fairly thin, lined, A4 notepaper, with a few thicker quality, plain white sheets. All but one of the pages are inserted, back to back, in transparent plastic sleeves. A few of the sleeves are slightly creased, suggesting that they have been folded down the middle.
Most pages contain work handproduced by the child. The handwriting is in blue biro, except for the last two pages, which are in fine black felt tip. Pages are numbered in biro, except for the last 3 pages. Any crossings out, corrections, framing or underlining are in the same substance as the rest of the writing. A ruler has been used for framing and underlining.. Drawings are usually outlined in pencil and coloured in with crayon, using a fairly long, loose, roughly controlled, stroke which isn’t always contained within the outline; one drawing is in felt tip.
The project also contains different kinds of imported materials. Three pages consist of CD Rom print outs; one of these also contains a feather, inserted loosely in the sleeve, and accompanied by a handwritten caption. Others contain photographs, lightly stuck onto the page with glue at the centre; these pages are inserted singly, with photos attached to each side of the single sheet.
Spine
On the spine, the title has been written in blue biro, on a small piece of white card, and inserted into the plastic slot available for this purpose.

The words appear to have been written in biro, using a heavy stroke on the plastic surface.
page 1 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RO53 index ] (not numbered by child)
This is the only sheet that is not enclosed in a transparent sleeve. The use of a range of brightly coloured felt tips for writing and drawing makes it different from the other pages. Pencil lines are visible beneath the felt tip, indicating drafting and alteration: insertion of second letter ‘t’ in ‘contents’ (previously ‘CONTENS’); there is no pencil version beneath the child’s surname, which suggests that it was added as an afterthought when working on the later draft. The drawing is in felt tip; no pencil lines visible here.
page 2 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RO53 index ] (child’s page 1)
There are several corrections: alterations to the letters in the words ‘country’, ‘well’, ‘which’ (original version not clear) and to ‘and’ and ‘hawk’ (lower to upper case changes). Erased pencil lines beneath the words ‘The sparrow-hawk’ (only as far as the letter ‘o’ in ‘sparrow’) indicate partial drafting, or the decision to use a different material. In the drawing, the layers of blue, brown and black crayon, applied with a mixture of soft and hard strokes (suggesting use of both point and side of the crayon), give it much greater depth and texture than the one on the previous page, and point to greater control of the tool. The plastic sleeve is creased down the middle, indicating that it has been folded.
page 3 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RO53 index ] (child’s page 2)
There is an alteration to the letters in the word: ‘important’ (the ‘r’ is written over a ‘t’). A ruler has been used here, to underline the title. In the drawing, notice the soft, rounded forms of the lines, which suggest a looser, more fluid movement of the pencil, than in the one on the previous page. The face of the person on the right has been coloured using a network of criss crossing strokes in yellow and pink. A very heavy stroke has been used to depict the binoculars. The plastic sleeve is creased down the middle, indicating that it has been folded.
page 4 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RO53 index ] (child’s page 3)
There are several corrections: alterations to single letters in words in chart: ‘flying’ and ‘car’; and below: ‘its’ and ‘prey’ (original not clear); also to page number (previously ‘4’). A ruler has been used here for the chart and underlining. There are small strokes up the side of the frame, indicating careful positioning of lines, also a few marks indicating movement of the ruler, causing a slip of the pen, and a broken line. There is a black mark at the right side of the page (looks as if it in in crayon, made by something with a criss-cross surface). The plastic sleeve is creased down the middle, indicating that it has been folded.
page 5 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RO53 index ] (child’s page 4)
There are several corrections: a crossing out, indicating alteration to the page number (previously ‘3’), also deletion of the word ‘but’ (replaced with ‘so’), and alterations to the letters in the words ‘country’, and ‘walk’ (original not clear). A ruler is NOT used for underlining here. The plastic sleeve is creased down the middle, indicating that it has been folded.
page 6 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RO53 index ] (child’s page 5)
This page consists of imported material: a CD Rom printout (the picture is printed in a purplish blue and brown). The plastic sleeve is creased down the middle, indicating that it has been folded.
page 7 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RO53 index ] (child’s page 6)
This page consists of imported material: a CDRom printout (printed in blue). The plastic sleeve is creased down the middle, indicating that it has been folded.
page 8 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RO53 index ] (child’s page 7)
There are several corrections: alterations to letters in words: ‘these’ (line 3), ‘predators’, ‘scavengers’ and ‘hooked’ (line 16), also crossing out and rewriting of words ‘the’ and ‘with’ (previously ‘whit’).
page 9 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RO53 index ] (child’s page 8)
This page consists of imported material: a CD Rom print out (printed in blue), with a feather inserted loosely inside the sleeve (the ‘quill’ end of the feather is stained blue, as if it has been dipped in ink).
page 10 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RO53 index ] (child’s page 9)
This page contains imported material: a glossy black and white photo, attached with a folded piece of sellotape at the centre. There are several corrections: alterations to letters in word ‘falconry’ (it looks as if it was previously ‘falcons’), also ‘day’ and ‘pictures’. There is only one sheet in this sleeve; it is weighed down by the weight of the photos on each side.
page 11 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RO53 index ] (child’s page 10)
This is the reverse side of the previous page. It contains imported material: a glossy black and white photo, attached with a folded piece of sellotape at the centre.

page 17 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RO53 index ] (child’s page 16)
This is the reverse side of the previous page. It contains imported material: a glossy black and white photo, attached with a folded piece of sellotape at the centre. There are orange specky marks at the top of the page; it is not clear what substance this is: it looks like crayon, or brick dust, but cannot be scraped off.
page 18 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RO53 index ] (child’s page 17)
There several corrections: alterations to letters in words ‘heavier’, ‘eagle’ and ‘hunt’, and also to choice of vocabulary: ‘light’ (from ‘large’).
page 19 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RO53 index ] (child’s page 18)
The work on this page is in fine, black felt tip. There is some smudging of the felt tip in the ruled lines at top and bottom of grid, indicating a slip of the ruler. There are several corrections: alterations to some of letters within grid, and to words ‘falcons’ and ‘sparrowhawk’,below.
page 20 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RO53 index ] (child’s page 19)
The work on this page is in fine black felt tip. There are several corrections here: alterations to letters in ‘kestrels’, RSPB, and ‘European’ (original not clear). This is the only sheet in this sleeve; the other side is blank.
