The project is contained in a bright, multicoloured, cardboard ringbinder. The ringbinder is in a very scruffy condition, worn around the edges, and creased down the front and back, and along the spine - where it is also torn; it has clearly been used before and has received a lot of handling. There are bits of writing, in biro, all over the cover, but most of it is on the back, where it is all upside down, indicating that this side formed the front cover in a previous life. This is confirmed when the file is opened; the metric conversion table, lining the left inside cover, is upside down. Like the outer cover, the inside is also damaged, with some of the lining torn away. Between the inner and outer linings, flimsy bits of fine, transparent plastic stick out around the edge, indicating that a plastic film originally extended all over the outer cover, but has since become torn away.
The contents of the binder appear rather slim: 12 sheets. These consist mostly of lined A4 notepaper, torn, very roughly, from a pad; only one sheet (p2) is different from the rest. Holes appear to have been punched in the side of each sheet; they are not all punched in the same place, so some sheets hang below the others and are rather crumpled; some sheets contain two sets of holes, with one set completely torn, and the newer set positioned higher or lower on the sheet. In general the pages point to a good deal of (possibly fairly rough) handling.
Most pages have work on both sides. The writing is in a range of substances: blue and black biro, pencil and blue ink pen; the later pages (14-23) are all in blue ink pen. Pencil is used for all the drawings (notice the detail, and the careful hesitant, repetitive, short strokes in many of these); some are shaded in coloured crayons. There are also some imported materials: a CD Rom printout (p11), a magazine cutting (p12), attached selotape, and some photos (pp15-23), inserted loosely, with holes punched in the sides, so that they are framed against the preceding or following lined sheet.

The child’s name, and name of school are written at the bottom, upside down, in biro.

The working surface here is different from the other pages; it is a thicker quality paper, a pale peach colour, with watermarks; the reverse sides provides evidence of its origins –a local business (perhaps a locksmith?). Only one side of the paper is used.

The writing is in black biro, pencil (two different kinds of pencil appear to have been used) and ink (foountain or cartridge) pen.

page 5 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ed62 index ]
Writing is in blue biro, correction in black biro. Two sets of holes have been punched in the side; the lower hole (ie the one in the right place) is torn through to the edge.

Page number is in black biro, rest of writing in blue biro.

Writing is in black biro. Dirty (greaasy?) marks visible through paper, from reverse side.

Writing is in black biro. Dirty (greaasy?) marks provide evidence of accidental damage.

Writing is in pencil. Drawings are coloured in using pencil, and yellow, brown or black crayon (the yellow and brown are layered in three of the drawings).

This page consists of imported material: a computer print out (CD Rom?). Page number is in pencil.
page 12 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ed62 index ]
This page contains imported material: a magazine cutting, attached with a single strip of selotape across its centre, so that it flaps loosely –it looks as if two layers of tape have been used (a bit dirty along one edge –perhaps the end of the role?) Two sets of holes have been punched in the side; the lower hole (ie the one in the right place) is torn through to the edge.

The left side of the sheet at first suggests that it has been torn very roughly out of a pad; but the ‘scalloped’ edge suggests that it may possibly have been carefully torn to create this effect. Writing is in ink (fountain or cartridge) pen.
page 15 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ ed62 index ]
This page contains imported material: a glossy photo inserted loosely through holes punched in the side (ie not attached to the main page surface); there are also holes punched in the top edge of the photo, suggesting that the child changed his mind about how he wanted to position it. The writing is in blue ink (fountain or cartridge) pen. The paper is torn roughly down the edge.

The writing is in blue ink (fountain or cartridge) pen. The paper is torn roughly down the edge and two sets of holes have been punched in the side; the upper holes are completely torn.

The creases and tears give an impression of the physical quality of the inside of the binder; the small black felt tip dots in the calendar (marking the days from January to June) and the word ‘football’, in pencil (on 3 dates in January and February) provide evidence of previous use for purposes other than this project.
