General comments

The project is contained in a slim, plastic, ‘butterfly clip’ binder; the back and side of the binder is yellow, and the front transparent. Inside, the project consists maily of sheets of lined A4 notepaper, with a few plain white sheets and a sheet of white card; these are enclosed, back to back, in transparent plastic sleeves, which are held in place by brass clips inserted through holes in the side. The project is neatly and tidily presented: the binder is smooth and undamaged and the pages are well protected.

Most of the writing is in blue biro (the different shades of blue ink throughout the project point to the use of at least three different biros); thick black felt tip, brightly coloured felt tips, pencil and crayon are also used; blue biro can be assumed, unless otherwise indicated, in the page notes. Mistakes are usually crossed out or corrected over the earlier version; pencil slashes through words on one page indicate mistakes to do with spelling, factual information, or repetition, suggesting that someone else may have been involved in checking the work.

Drawings are mostly in pencil crayon but there is some use of pencil, pastel crayon, charcoal crayon and felt tip; the crayon, in particular, is applied in a variety of ways, creating different visual effects. There is some evidence of the use of a ruler and circular template. Page numbers are written in blue biro on little round sticky labels attached to the outer corner of each page (ie the sheet itself, not the sleeve); the number is often smudged, indicating that it has become damp.

The project contains a large number of imported materials: photos and postcards, usually attached to the paper with bluetack, but sometimes with glue or white sticky labels; also double-sided leaflets and a thin card ‘colouring sheet’, inserted loosely into the sleeve.

Comments on specific pages

cover page [ next page ] [ top ] [ KH62 index ] - Cover page

This page is intially viewed through the plastic cover of the binder. The title is in yellow felt tip over black biro. The other writing is in blue biro; it has faded and may not be clear in the scan. The child’s name has been written very carefully: the first name is in capitals, carefully positioned to fit neatly within the space of two lines; the surname is in lower case letters, positioned to fit within a single line space.

note_lan -ARE WE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FADING? What is it like on the scan? May need to alter comments!

This page contains imported materials: two photos attached firmly with glue around the edge.

page 2 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ KH62 index ] (child’s page 1)

The title and frame are in felt tip over biro; the word ‘Williamson’ is a different shade of yellow to the other parts, which appear to be in bright yellow highlighter; notice how carefully the word ‘Park’ has been written, with the letters broken to fit in between the other lines of writing -giving the impression of weaving in and out. The shading and decoration around the edge are in blue and green felt tip (the blue looks very dry, as if it is running out). The felt tip is visible under the page sticker, indicating that the stickers (here and probably on other pages too) were attached after the pages had been completed.

page 8 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ KH62 index ] (child’s page 7)

This page consists of imported material: a small leaflet, made of thin card, unfolded to A4 size and inserted loosely (unmounted) into the sleeve. Notice that the page number has been stuck to the inner, rather than the outer corner here, unlike other pages.

page 9 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ KH62 index ] (child’s page 8)

This page consists of imported material: this is the reverse side of the leaflet on the previous page.

page 10 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ KH62 index ] (child’s page 9)

This page contains imported material: two glossy postcards. Unlike most other pages: the working surface is plain white paper; the photos are attached with glue (in a circle around the edge), not bluetack; the sleeve contains only one sheet (the blank side is visible when the page is turned); and the page number has been stuck to the plastic sleeve, not the paper.

page 11 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ KH62 index ] (child’s page 10)

Title and underlining are in felt tip.

page 12 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ KH62 index ] (child’s page 11)

This page contains imported material: a thin card ‘colouring sheet’, inserted loosely into the sleeve.

page 13 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ KH62 index ] (child’s page 12)

This page contains imported material: a glossy postcard attached with two tiny bits of blue tack, at top and bottom. The framing is in felt tip; notice the way in which the various frames have been broken, top right, to allow space around words, frame and arrow.

In the fifth line of text at the bottom of the page, the words ‘top and’ have been rewritten in a second layer of biro.

page 14 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ KH62 index ] (child’s page 13)

This page contains two types of imported material: a paper flyer, attached only by the page number sticker top left, and a glossy postcard, inserted loosely at the bottom of the sleeve. The child’s work has been done on a piece of lined paper which has been cut out and inserted loosely in the centre of the sleeve. These three pieces of material are set against a sheet of plain white paper.

page 15 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ KH62 index ] (child’s page 14)

This page consists of imported material: a small leaflet, made of thin, bright yellow, card, unfolded to A4 size and inserted loosely (unmounted) into the plastic sleeve. The holes punched at the bottom are not used for filing here; they point either to previous storage, or to a change of mind regarding method of presentation in this project.

page 17 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ KH62 index ] (child’s page 16)

The working surface is plain white paper. The drawing and background shading is in pastel crayon, applied in different ways: very light strokes are used for the outline of the ‘hat’ and much heavier strokes for what I take to be the people in the seats; there is some layering of different colours in the grass (a mixture of different shades of green) and the base of the ‘Mexican Hat’ (a mixture of brown and red); the background shading looks as if it may have been done using the side of the crayon - there are scratchy marks in the grassy area, possibly caused from the rough edge of the paper around the top of the crayon. Notice the careful way in which the shading of the sky is broken to fit around the writing, indicating that the writing was completed first.

page 18 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ KH62 index ] (child’s page 17)

The working surface is plain white paper. The line across the page has been ruled; a very light draft line (made using a very fine, sharp pencil) is visible beneath the thicker pencil line of the final version. The circular frames (containing the words) are drawn in pencil using a ruler and some kind of circular template, or pair of compasses, but the triangular sections within the circles appear to have been drawn freehand. The ‘steps’ have been drafted in pencil (the lines are visible beneath the felt tip.) The blue background has been shaded in what appears to be very dry felt tip (it looks as if the pen was about to run out). The triangular sections have been heavily shaded in yellow felt tip; some blue marks visible through the yellow indicate that the yellow areas were shaded later.

page 19 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ KH62 index ] (child’s page 18)

The working surface is plain white paper. The ‘steps’ are outlined using a very fine sharp pencil, but reworked using a much thicker, softer pencil. The shading is in pastel crayon.

page 22 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ KH62 index ] (child’s page 23)

This page contains imported material: a glossy photo, attached with tiny bits of bluetack at the corners. There are fine pencil lines through some of the words, indicating careful checking, and some correction to, the final draft.

page 23 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ KH62 index ] (child’s page 22)

The working surface is smooth white card. The writing appears to be in pencil (on left) and green biro (elsewhere); the words on the left have been framed using two pastel crayons (turquoise lines are visible beneath the blue); the drawing appears to be in charcoal crayon, deliberately smudged to create this effect.

page 24 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ KH62 index ] (child’s page 23)

The working surface is lined paper. The animal has been drawn in pencil; very fine strokes used for eye and mouth, and much heavier strokes for outline of body. Framing and shading are in pastel crayon: the grassy area consists of a mixture of two different shades of green; sky is blue; frame around words is turquoise.

Drawing at bottom is in pencil crayon

page 28 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ KH62 index ] (child’s page 27)

The figure is outlined in pencil; the rest of the drawing appears to be in a mixture of pencil crayon (for wood playground and obstacle course) and pastel crayon (for other parts); fine lines of green biro appear to have been used on top of the pastel crayon, on the hilly fields at the bottom of the page, but it could be some other substance.

page 29 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ KH62 index ] (child’s page 28)

The drawing appears to be in a mixture of pencil crayon (for the ‘ride’, hand, and line of horizon) and pastel crayon (for other parts); the grassy area has been shaded in a mixture of two different shades of green and the middle ‘sleigh’ appears to have been drawn in orange crayon first, then reworked in red. The sleeve contains just this one sheet of paper.

This page contains imported material: a glossy photos, attached firmly with glue. The title has been written and underlined in black biro and yellow felt tip (notice the similarity to the contents page, suggesting that they may have been produced at the same time). The sleeve contains just this one sheet of paper.
