The project is contained in a bright red, glossy, plastic ‘Liverpool Football Club’ ringbinder (note: the logo and words printed on the front, back and spine are part of the design of the binder itself, not added by the child); the binder is in good condition –it looks brand new.
The shiny, solid quality of the ringbinder contrasts with the quality of some of the paper contained within it.
The pages consist mainly of sheets of plain white typing paper of two different qualities (mostly extremely thin); there are some very thin, rough quality, off-white sheets, easily torn during the process of pulling them off the pad. The sheets are inserted loosely into the binder, through holes punched in the side of each page; sometimes two attempts have been made to get one of the holes in the right place. Protective rings have been stuck around the holes, usually on the front of the page. There is no other form of protection. The work has been done on only one side of each page; the reverse side is left blank; the work can easily be seen (and felt) from the other side and this gives the project a rather flimsy, fragile feel.
Most of the writing is in black biro, as are the page numbers, (black biro can be assumed unless otherwise indicated in the page notes) but a fountain/cartridge ink pen has been used on some pages and pencil on one; felt tip is used for some words that appear as part of drawings, or as headings of sections or sub-sections; pencil can be seen under the felt tip on one page; corrections are in same substance as writing. Drawings are in pastel crayon, felt tip or pencil; pencil is also used with felt tip, for drafting. There is evidence of the use of an eraser. A ruler has been used for much of the underlining and framing.
The project includes some imported materials: an A4 ‘poster’ type glossy picture, small magazine cuttings (possibly some internet printouts too; it’s not quite clear) and a single black and white photocopy. These have been carefully positioned and mounted, stuck with glue around the edge onto the thin white paper; in each case, the glue is clearly visible on the reverse side, and the paper is bent and puckered, suggesting that the glue was very wet. These pages draw attention to the difficulties associated with using particular materials (eg thin absorbent paper and sloppy glue).

This is the front of the binder. The child has not done any work on this surface; the logo and words printed on the front (and also back and spine) are part of the design of the binder itself, not added by the child.
page 1 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RJ62 index ] (contents page)
The working surface is rough quality off white paper. Work is in biro and crayon. Yellow crayon may not be visible on the scan (eg the area around the title).
page 2 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RJ62 index ] (child’s page 1)
This page consists of imported material: an A4 ‘poster’ type glossy picture which looks as if it may have been torn out of a magazine (the signatures of the players appear to be part of the printed image, but it’s not entirely clear). The picture has been mounted firmly on a very thin sheet of rough quality off-white paper, but, with the weight of the picture and the glue, the page feels quite stiff and heavy. The holes in the side are protected with rings on the back of this sheet, rather than the front, as on other pages.
page 3 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RJ62 index ] (child’s page 2)
The working surface is a sheet of very thin typing paper. Title and drawing are in felt tip, over an initial draft outline in pencil.
page 4 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RJ62 index ] (child’s page 3)
The working surface is a sheet of very thin typing paper. The drawings are in felt tip only; it has been used quite heavily, and overlayed in some areas (eg banana), so that it comes right through onto the reverse side.
page 5 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RJ62 index ] (child’s page 4)
The working surface is a sheet of very thin typing paper. Accidental blobs of felt tip bottom right (possibly from reverse image of banana, on back of previous page)
page 6 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RJ62 index ] (child’s page 5)
The working surface is a sheet of very thin typing paper. All the work has been carefully drafted in pencil, then redone in felt tip. Erased lines indicate careful alteration to initial draft of words at bottom and right side of picture.
page 7 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RJ62 index ] (child’s page 6)

The drawing is in pencil; the hair has been sensitively depicted, using light, softly curved strokes of different lengths; particular attention has been given to the logo on the garment, where erased lines indicate alteration to an earlier draft. Notice alteration to page number on this page. The child has written her name (bottom right); it appears to have been crossed out, but the line through the centre is probably intended as part of the signature (as it appears again in a similar form on the following page)
NB CHECK THAT THE SIGNATURE DOES NOT APPEAR ON THE SCAN!
