The project is contained in a slim plastic binder; the back and side of the binder are blue, and the front transparent; the front cover page is visible through the front of the binder. Inside, the pages consist mainly of sheets of A4, narrow-lined notepaper, with a few thin, plain white sheets (lined notepaper is used unless otherwise indicated in the page notes). The pages are held in place against the back of the binder, by brass clips, inserted through holes punched in the side of each sheet.
The work is on only one side of the paper. Most of the writing is in black biro, but other materials are also used: blue biro, pencil, crayon, and black felt tip in different thicknesses. (Black biro is used unless otherwise indicated in the page notes.) Underlining and corrections are generally in the same material as the writing, but not always. Pencil, crayon, and felt tip are used for the drawings. There is some imported material: thick, black currant scented roller blade grease smeared onto the page, glossy photos, card flyers and a page from a magazine, inserted into the project using sellotape or holes punched in the side.
The binder is a bit bruised and grubby (the inside back cover is particularly bruised); this suggests that it may have been used for another purpose in the past. Also, some of the sheets are rather creased and crumpled, and some holes torn, indicating that they have received a lot of handling. However, other pages are quite clean and undamaged. In general, although the project carries evidence of the physical process of production, it does not appear to have been roughly handled, and has been neatly and carefully put together .

This is the front of the binder. The title page is visible through the transparent plastic cover.

The work is all in crayon. There is a two inch tear in the paper, running up from the bottom, on the left side of the page.
page 2 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RO62 index ]
The work is all in pencil, on thin white paper; the variation in strengths and direction of strokes reflect both control of the medium, and great attention to the boot’s structure and appearance.

page 9 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RO62 index ]
This page contains imported material: two glossy photos each attached with a folded strip of sellotape, at the back, in the centre. In the writing at the bottom of the page, the dot of the ‘I’ in the word ‘grind’ touches the edge of the photo; this indicates that the writing was completed after the photos had been attached.

All the black bits are in biro and the rest in crayon (except for the background to the ‘P’ logo, which is shaded lightly in pencil). The height of the letters in the word ‘SKIN’ has been very carefully controlled to fit neatly into the space between the narrow lines of the paper. The child has signed his name at the bottom; the intial letters are written with a slight ‘flourish’.
page 11 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RO62 index ]
Writing and outlines of drawings are in black biro and the rest in crayon. Notice the different kinds of strokes (eg in the figure bottom left, the repeated short strokes in the right arm, compared with the looser stroke used to depict the left trouser leg); they seem to express a combination of both hesitance and confidence in drawing. The captions are framed in orange crayon and the background is very lightly shaded with extremely light red strokes (this might not be clear in the scan). This page is quite crumpled and creased.
page 12 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RO62 index ]
Writing is in biro, outlines of drawings in pencil, and the rest in crayon. (The drawing has been produce in quite a different manner from the one on page 2.) This page is quite crumpled and creased.
page 13 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RO62 index ]
Most of the writing is in black biro, but the words down the left side of the bottom half of the page is in fine black felt tip and the rest of the bottom third of the page is in blue biro. This suggests that different sections of the text were written at different times. This page is quite crumpled and creased, and slightly torn at the right edge. The bottom hole in the left side has been completely torn, so the page is held just by one.
page 14 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RO62 index ]
The working surface is thin, white paper. The writing is in blue biro; the rest of the work is in pencil, felt tip and black biro: the figures are drawn in pencil; the frames are in felt tip, over pencil, and in one case also black biro (frame bottom left); the background design (of shapes and symbols) is just in felt tip, as are the lines above and below the title. The page is very crumpled.
page 15 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RO62 index ]
Writing, underlining, framing and outlines of drawings are in black biro, the rest in crayon. The background is very lightly shaded with extremely light red strokes (this might not be clear in the scan).

The words must have been very slowly and carefully written and positioned in order to form the shape of the rollerblade. Shading is in crayon (the yellow background strokes may not be clear on the scan), these very loose strokes give an impression of speedy movement, in direct contrast to the action used for the writing.
page 17 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RO62 index ]
The writing and outlining is in fine felt tip; drawings are coloured (fairly roughly) in crayon.
page 18 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RO62 index ]
The word ‘VIDEOS’ has been altered; it has been reworked very heavily, resulting in deep indentations.
page 19 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RO62 index ]
Most of the writing is in fine black felt tip, but in the bottom right hand corner, there is some work in pink crayon (this may not be clear on the scan): a written message ‘some wax, please smell’, and a line leading from it to some blackcurrant scented rollerblade grease, smeared directly onto the paper and framed in pink crayon. (The rollerblade grease provides the only example that we have come across of the use of this particular substance in a child’s project!)
page 20 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RO62 index ]
The logo at the bottom has been very carefully shaded in black biro, using a fairly light stroke.

This page contains imported material: a single sided piece of glossy card, attached with strips of sellotape at the corners. Biro marks extend over the sellotape, top left, indicating that the framing and (probably) the writing were added after the piece of card had been attached.

The drawing is outlined in pencil and coloured in with crayon; the posts supporting the railing have been redrawn in felt tip over the pencil. The words at the top are written in crayon and underlined in black biro (notice the different kinds of strokes used for the underlining).

The top hole is completely torn, so the page is held just by the lower one.

The writing in the bottom half of the page is in blue biro. The rest of the work, including the kite shaped drawing, is in black biro
page 31 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RO62 index ]
Notice the very different strokes used for underlining and framing on this page. The frame around the words in the centre (‘The Rollerblade Rap’) is particularly interesting: a very, very faint biro line, visible beneath the final version, provides evidence of very light, tentative, drafting.
page 32 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RO62 index ]
This page contains imported material: a single sided, glossy A4 sheet, which appears to come from a leaflet or magazine. It has been inserted in the binder through holes punched in the side; the holes are quite badly torn.
page 33 [ previous page ] [ top ] [ RO62 index ]
Two sets of holes have been punched in the side; the page is held by the second, inner set of holes; the top hole in the outer set is completely torn through.
