Key to terms used in physical descriptions
The project is contained in a large, black plastic A4 ringbinder, with a 3" wide spine, and four large ‘rings’. It is showing signs of wear: the cover is slightly scratched, and on the inside there is bruising from the rings, suggesting that it may have been used before. A large plastic pocket extends over the front cover; there is some grit and dust inside the pocket, pointing to previous use. Inside the binder there are over a hundred pages. Some are inserted in transparent plastic sleeves, but many are held in place through 4 holes punched in the side (looks as if they were done using a ‘two-hole’ puncher, twice); often the holes are torn. The pages completely fill the binder, which gives the impression of being packed as full as it possibly can be –perhaps rather over full –and some of the pages extend slightly beyond its edges. The reader is expected to put some effort into interacting physically with the project: it is a very heavy, bulky object, which is awkward to handle, and materials frequently have to be unfolded, or taken out of plastic sleeves.
The work has been done mainly on sheets of plain white A4 paper, but tracing paper and sheets of rough quality off-white paper are also used; the pages are mostly one sided. Almost all the writing has been wordprocessed and printed (this can be assumed unless indicated in the page notes), but on one page pencil is used for labels accompanying a diagram; page numbers are written in black biro, throughout, but felt tip is sometimes used for numbering. There are several drawings, mostly outlined using a sharp pencil, with evidence of very careful use of a ruler, and fine, sketchy pencil lines sometimes visible beneath the final version, indicating light, but careful drafting; felt tips (including metalic silver and gold), and pastel crayon are also used.
The project contains a wide variety of ‘imported’ materials (eg magazine cuttings, photos, postcards, train tickets, timetables, platform tickets, leaflets, information sheets, booklets, letters, posters, photocopies, order form, receipt). They are varied in their own physical form and are inserted in different ways, using a range of tools and techniques. Many have been attached firmly to the paper, carefully positioned below, or around the wordprocessed text (the use of glue can be assumed unless otherwise indicated in the page notes - other methods include sticky photo corners or staples). Some materials have been loosely inserted in transparent plastic sleeves; others have been inserted directly into the binder, through holes punched in the side. Sometimes various techniques are combined.
While the child’s work is neatly and carefully presented, there is some evidence of accidental damage to the pages. Some of the plastic sleeves are crumpled; unprotected pages which extend beyond the edges of the binder are curled up and look worn. Some of the holes punched in the sides of pages are torn as a result of being positioned very close to the edge, and/or from repeated wear; others have been punched in the wrong place, then repunched, indicating difficulty in positioning them (a tiny crescent shaped piece of paper fell out of the binder –evidence of a partial repunch). Some pages have come into contact with other substances, suggesting that they have been placed on sticky surfaces, splashed, or trodden on.
cover page [ next page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] - Cover page
This page contains imported material: a glossy paper cutting (carefully cut out into a circular shape, following the edge of the picture), inserted into the large plastic ‘pocket’ on the front cover of the binder (it’s open at the top). The cutting is not fixed firmly in place and tends to shift position when the project is handled. The small white marks look like tippex, but appear to be underneath the plastic; it is difficult to see how they got there, as the pocket is quite tight. Grit and dust inside the pocket, particularly in the corners, point to previous use.
page 1 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (title page)
This page contains imported material: 18 small cuttings.
page 2 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 1)
The reverse side of the sheet appears to have been splashed with some kind of greenish liquid, with solid leafy bits in it (looks like soup).
page 3 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 2)
In the drawing, the blurred lines suggest that this is a traced image; some lines have been redrawn over the tracing, using a very sharp pencil.

page 5 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] -
page 6 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 5)
This page contains imported material: a glossy photo. The drawings and captions are in pencil, which looks as if it has been sharpened half way through. This is the only page in the project with writing in pencil; erased lines indicate alteration to the word ‘CAUTION’ (-not very clear, but it looks as if the letter ‘U’ may have been missed out in the first version).
page 7 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 6)
This page contains imported material: a glossy photo. The drawing is in pencil and pastel crayon; green and blue crayon have been overlayed and in some places quite heavily worked; other areas are more lightly shaded; pencil has been used initially for drafting then used again, over the crayon, in some areas (eg the drawers of the desk). It is not clear whether the drawing was done before or after the page was printed. The drawing extends slightly underneath the photo, indicating that the photo was stuck on last of all, after the drawing had been completed.
page 8 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 7)
This page contains imported material: a small ticket, made of thick card. It is creased down the middle. It has been stuck down fairly firmly but is loose down the left side.
page 9 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 8)
This page contains imported materials: rail tickets. In the side of the page, the two top holes have been punched closer to the side than the others, and are now completely torn, so the page is now held just by the two lower holes.
page 10 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 9)
This page contains imported materials: rail tickets. In the side of the page the two top holes have been punched closer to the side than the others, and are now completely torn, so the page is now held just by the two lower holes.
page 11 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 10)
This page contains imported materials: small rail timetables (they can be unfolded). In the side of the page the two top holes have been punched closer to the side than the others, and are now completely torn, so the page is now held just by the two lower holes.
page 12 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 11)
This page consists of a transparent plastic sleeve containing several railway timetables (they are inserted loosely into the sleeve); it feels quite heavy, and is awkward to turn over. The page number has been written by hand on the corner of a white sticky label, cut down to a smaller size, and stuck onto the plastic sleeve, at the bottom.
page 13 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 12)
This page contains imported material: a glossy photo. Tippex and black felt tip have been used to make a correction to the writing (earlier version not clear).
page 14, page 14a [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 13)
The initial view of this page is a blank piece of white paper (page 14); it is actually a folded sheet, which can be unfolded from the left side, to reveal an A3 size page (14A), containing a large drawing on a piece of tracing paper, mounted on a plain white sheet. The drawing has been traced directly onto the paper, firmly and carefully outlined in pencil and thoughtfully coloured, using crayon and metalic silver and gold felt tip (the metalic surface catches the light when the page is moved). The tracing paper is slightly creased, indicating where it was folded before being used; it is also puckered from the glue; it extends slightly over the side of the white paper and has been partially stuck down on the back. The page number has been written by hand on the corner of a white sticky label, cut down to a smaller size, and stuck onto the white sheet, at the bottom of the side that initially faces the reader. The centre fold has been carefully positioned to allow the holes down the side to be punched through only one side of the sheet, so that it can easily be unfolded.
page 15 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 14)
This page consists of imported material : a folded A5 information sheet on good quality glossy paper, inserted loosely in a plastic sleeve. The page number has been written by hand on the corner of a white sticky label, cut down to a smaller size, and stuck onto the plastic sleeve, at the bottom.
page 16 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 15)
The drawing has been done on tracing paper, using a ruler and a very sharp pencil. The tracing paper has been cut out (not very straight) and stuck onto the page with glue.
page 17 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (not numbered by child)
This page consists of imported material: a large, matt, ‘poster’ type picture. It has been folded, and holes have been punched down one side, so that it can be unfolded easily. The child has not numbered this page, which suggests that it may have been inserted later, after the numbering was complete.
page 18 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 16)
This page contains imported material: a glossy photo.
page 19 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 17)
The drawing has been extremely carefully constructed, using a ruler and a very sharp pencil, with great attention paid to measurement and detail. There don’t appear to be any erased lines. A strip of tippex has been used to remove a word (looks like ‘Crampton’s) in the bottom line of writing.
page 20 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 18)

page 33 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 27)
This page contains imported material: two glossy photos. In the lower photo, a strip of approximately 1" wide has been cut off along the top; this looks as if it was done in order to fit the photo into the available space (there is more wordprocessed text here than on the previous page, allowing less space for the photos).
page 34 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 28)
A tiny speck of light brown substance (possibly food, looks like cereal or biscuit) is stuck to the page, bottom right.

page 37 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 31)
This page contains imported material: two photos. The photos have been overlapped, to form one long picture: the one in the bottom half has been stuck over the top of the one in the upper half. There is some writing on the reverse of the photo at the bottom (it can be seen, upside down through the other side of the paper); it says: YORK RAILWAY MUSEUM / TRAINS AROUND TURN TABLES IN / GREAT HALL (/ =line break); it could be Naeman’s handwriting.
page 38 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 32)
This page contains imported material: two glossy photos, glued at the corners. Notice how carefully the wordprocessed text has been positioned to allow space for each photo. page 44 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 38)
This page contains imported material: a combined map and a till receipt, printed on white A5 paper and stuck onto the page. The sheet has also been used for another purpose: there are handwritten notes, about the trains, on the back (these are more clearly visible through the white mounting sheet, from the back of the page); they appear to be in an adult hand - it doesn’t look at all like Naeman’s writing.
page 45 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 39)
This page consists of imported material: a large brass rubbing, done in what appears to be red wax crayon, on thin, rough quality paper, cut out into a long rectangle and folded at the centre, to fit into the plastic sleeve. The page number has been written by hand on the corner of a white sticky label, cut down to a smaller size, and stuck onto the plastic sleeve, at the bottom.
page 46 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 40)

The page number has been written by hand on the corner of a white sticky label, cut down to a smaller size, and stuck onto the plastic sleeve, at the bottom.
page 48 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 45)
This page consists of imported material: a single, doublesided sheet; the poor quality of the print indicates that it is a photocopy; it appears to come from the same source as the materials on the next page. Three of the holes in the side are torn; the page is now held in place only by the top hole.
page 49 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s pages 46 –52)
These pages consist of imported material. Page 49 is the first of 7 single sided photocopied sheets. Small staple holes (top left) indicate that they were originally stapled together as a leaflet. page 63 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 67)
This page contains imported material: two glossy photos. The edges of the black and white one are not straight and indicate that it has been cut out of a larger photo; also, it has been printed on thinner paper than the photo at the bottom. Notice how carefully the wordprocessed text has been positioned to allow space for each photo.
page 64 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 68)
This page consists of imported material: a small, glossy backed booklet (containing mostly black and white text and photos) inserted in a plastic sleeve. The sleeve contains another piece of material (ie page 69). The page number has been written by hand on the corner of a white sticky label, cut down to a smaller size, and stuck onto the plastic sleeve, at the bottom.
page 65 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (not numbered by child)
This page consists of imported material: a small A5 information sheet, printed (singlesided) on cream coloured paper, and inserted into the same plastic sleeve as the previous page (they are arranged back to back).
page 66 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 70)
This page contains a mixture of wordprocessed, handwritten and hand drawn information. The map appears to have been traced directly onto the paper: fine pencil lines indicate careful drafting; it has been redrawn in felt tip; the paper is very thin: the felt tip is visible from the other side. The numbers are in red, blue and green felt tip (not drafted in pencil), colour co-ordinated to match numbers listed on following 3 pages.
page 67 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s pages 71-73)
This is the first of three pages consisting of three separate, single sided A4 sheets, which contain a continuous list of names, consisting of both handwritten and wordprocessed text. The numbers have been added by hand, using three different coloured felt tips: numbers 1-23 (ie the first section) in red, 24-25 (ie the second section) in blue, and 38-43 (ie the third section) in green. The colour scheme corresponds to the colours used in the map on the previous page, for which this list provides a key.

This page consists of imported materials: several small leaflets inserted loosely in a plastic sleeve. The page number has been written by hand on the corner of a white sticky label, cut down to a smaller size, and stuck onto the plastic sleeve, at the bottom.
page 71 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 79)
This page consists of imported material: it is the first of a set of 29 single sided, photocopied sheets, taken from two sections of a single source (the layout is much the same for each sheet). They have been inserted in the binder using holes punched in the side; the two holes punched at the top of the first sheet are torn, but those in the other sheets have not been damaged. The first set of texts are numbered S1 –S19 in the original; the whole set is included except for pages S14 and S16; a number S2a is included. The second set are numbered D1-D12 in the original; the whole set is included except for pages D2 and D11; a number D1a is included.
page 72 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 80)
This page consists of imported material: a small A5 workbook (made up of two doublesided A4 sheets, one loosely inserted inside the other); the quality of the print suggests that it is a photocopy. The page number has been written by hand on the corner of a white sticky label, cut down to a smaller size, and stuck onto the plastic sleeve, at the bottom.
page 73 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 81)
This page consists of imported material; two small A5 workbooks, printed on yellow paper (each formed by folding two double sided A4 sheets, one inside the other). They have been stapled together at top, middle and bottom, to form a single A5 leaflet; this has then been stapled directly onto the white paper, using 4 staples, positioned in pairs, at roughly 1/3 intervals down the side (these are visible on the reverse side of the page). The page is quite weighty, and awkward to turn over.
page 74 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s pages 84 –87)
This is imported material: the first of four double sided sheets which appear to come from the same publication (printed in brown, on thin card. The sheets look as if they may originally have formed a booklet, which has been cut by hand down the inside edge. The holes are punched very close to the edge; top three holes on each sheet are all torn, it’s now held only by bottom holes. Dirty brown marks on back of final sheet suggest that it has come into contact with a wet, muddy substance (fine parallel lines give the impression that it may have been trodden on, or a brush dragged across the surface).
page 75 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 88)
Three small drops of some kind of liquid has come into contact with this page and made the ink in a few of the words run slightly. (eg train, line 10)
page 76 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 89)
This page consists of imported ‘research’ material. The paper used here is not the same quality as earlier sheets; it is slightly rougher, and not quite the same colour.
page 77 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 90)
This page consists of imported material: research data. It is the first of a set of completed questionnaires, each in different handwriting. Holes have been punched in the side: page 77 is the only sheet to have holes punched down the outer as well as the inner edge. The bottom hole on one sheet has been mended, using a small rectangular sticky label. Two sheets are curled and worn along the bottom edge, where it extends lower than the others (indicating that the holes were not all punched at the same time). There are other signs of wear: several sheets are creased or crumpled; one has been folded into 8 (some of the folds are dirty, and there other grubby marks on it); one is dirty and torn top left (looks as if it has come into contact with some wet, muddy substance); the last sheet has a few yellow ochre splash marks on it, indicating contact with some kind of liquid/substance. These varied physical features provide evidence of different people’s involvement in the project.
page 78 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 99)

page 81 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 105)
This page contains imported material: two small leaflets, attached so that they can be unfolded. The one on the left is made of thin card; the one on the right is made of paper and can be unfolded in two directions to form a small ‘poster’ approx A3 size. They are mounted on white paper, which has holes punched in the side; there have been at least two attempts to get the holes positioned in the right place and the top hole is completely torn.
page 82 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 107)
This page contains imported materials: the one on the left is a 12 page leaflet; the one on the right can be unfolded in two directions, to form an A3 size poster. The holes have been punched very close to the side of the white mounting sheet. There have been several attempts to get the two central holes positioned in the right place and the two bottom holes are completely torn.

This page contains imported material: a cutting of a copy of a letter (not clear whether it is a photocopy or a print out.). It has been signed by the child, using black biro. The copy has been cut to A5 size, then stuck onto the A4 sheet (on which the title has been printed). The corners of the cutting are loose; a dirty mark on the left may have come from the printer, or photocopier.

page 97 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 125)
This page consists of imported material: a large glossy poster, folded into 8 and inserted into the binder with holes punched through the ‘open’ side (through only four thicknesses of paper; it can be partly unfolded from behind). Unlike the other posters in this project, the reader has to take the folder out of the binder in order to unfold it. The holes have become torn and there has been an attempt to mend them with white sticky tape. When unfolded, there are signs of the possible beginnings of holes, or semi-made holes, in the centre of the poster, along the centre fold, which suggests that the child may have changed his mind about their positioning, deciding to have them along the edge rather than down the centre. On the reverse, there are a few rough textured brown marks which suggest that the poster has come into contact with some kind of fairly dry, sticky substance.
page 98 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] (child’s page 126)

page 99 [ previous page ] [ top ] [ NA62 index ] - Back cover
This is the back cover of the binder. It contains imported material: a glossy A4 poster (a smaller version of the A3 poster on page 70). It is stuck, with glue, directly onto the plastic surface.
