a great meeting a top of a hill where the priest came no[t]
though he had threatened: & all was quiet: & the everlasting
day & renowned truth of the everlasting God was sounded
over those dark countries: & his son sett over all.
And all that had made a profession of the Son of God, now the day
was come they might receive him, & as many as did receive
him to them he would give power to become the sons of God
as he had done to me: & he that had the Son of
God, he had life eternal: & he that had not the son of
God let him profess all the scriptures from Genesis to the
Revelations, he had not life.
And after that all was turned to the light of Christ: by which they
might see him & receive him & know where their teacher
was: & the everlasting truth largely declared, we passed
away through Hexham peaceably & so came into Gilsland
where some in that country were very thievish: where a Friend spied
the priest | & went to speak to him, & he came down to our inn
& the townspeople came about us: & so the priest said he
would prove us deceivers out of the Bible, but could not find
no Scripture for his purpose: so he went into the Inn, &
after a while came out, & brought that Scripture, the doctrines
& commandments of men, touch them not & taste them not; for
they perish with the using: which, poor man, was his
own condition, for we was persecuted because we would
not taste nor touch nor handle their doctrines which we knew
perished with the using.
* So I asked him what he called the steeplehouse: Oh, said
he, the dreadful house of God, the temple of God, & I let him
& the poor dark people see that their bodies should be the temples of
God: & Christ never commanded these temples, but had ended
that temple at Jerusalem which God had commanded; & so
the priest got away: & the people began to tell us that
they feared we would take their purses or steal their horses: & judged
us like themselves, who are naturally given to thieving;
& the next day we came through that country Into Cumberland
again.
