Born:

15th August, 1924, Sale, England

Early years:

Born the son of a shopkeeper Bolt grew up in the Manchester area

Schooling:

Bolt attended Manchester Grammar School and left to go to work. He later entered Manchester University in 1943 but then served in the armed forces for the rest of World War 2. He graduated with a BA in History in 1949

Career:

Bolt initially worked in insurance before going to University. He then became a teacher until 1958 when his career as a dramatist took off with his 1957 play Flowering Cherry. He worked as a playwright and then as a screenwriter, his works for screen include Lawrence of Arabia (1962) and Dr Zhivago (1965) for which he received the Oscar for Best Screenplay- Adapted. He also won the Oscar for Best ScreenPlay- Adapted for A Man for All Seasons in 1966 and wrote and directed Lady Caroline Lamb(1972)

Final years:

In 1979 Bolt suffered heart attack, followed by a stroke but continued to write

Died:

12th February, 1995, Petersfield, England
