Born:

23rd of April, 1899 in St. Petersburg, Russia

Early years:

Nabokov's family was extraordinarily wealthy. Their lineage included princes and generals and government ministers.

Schooling:

Nabokov was educated by British and French tutors. After the family had to leave Russia (because of the Russian revolution), he entered Trinity College, Cambridge from where he graduated three years later in 1923.

Career:

Nabokov lived in Berlin for fifteen years and worked as a translator, tutor and tennis coach. He won acceptance as the leading young writer in the Berlin Russian community, with major publishing house and literary journals. As a writer he gained his first literary success with his translations of some of Heine's songs. His first novel, Mashenka, written in Russian, appeared in 1926. In 1940 Nabokov moved to the U.S. with his family. He taught at Wellesley College and Cornell University. His first publication in English was A Few Notes on Crimean Lepidoptera.

Final years:

From 1959 he lived in Switzerland. He published a four-volume translation and commentary on Pushkin's Eugene Onegin.

Died:

He died on 2nd of July, 1977 in Montreux, Switzerland.
