Chuckle Stop! The Austrian chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel used to wear bow-ties. His deviation from the norm was obviously noticed, because when the Austrian government started a coalition with the extreme-right party, and was subsequently boycotted in Europe, politicians in the European Commission and the Council of Ministers wore pins that showed crossed-out bow-ties (the so-called 'bow-tie protest' !) Schuessel then resorted to wearing an ordinary tie, "which Austrian officials said was intended to convey the wish for a fresh start" (Source: International Herald Tribune, February 2000) Close this window before continuing your session. |
