Octavo, pp. 21. The imprint is on the reverse of the title-page: “London: A. and G. A. Spottiswoode, New Street Square.” It is repeated on the reverse of p. 21, where also is an announcement that the Third Volume of Modern Painters was “preparing for publication.” Issued on July 22, 1854, in stiffened, buff-coloured wrappers, with the title-page (enclosed in a ruled frame) repeated on the front cover. Price one shilling.
The pamphlet was reprinted in On the Old Road, 1885, vol. i. pp. 349-370 (§§ 253-273), and again in the second edition of that collection, 1899, vol. i. pp. 355-375 (§§ 253-273).]
The variations in the text are these: § 1, line 5, “Simmenthal” misprinted “Simnenthal” in the first reprint; line 9, “those low larch huts” misprinted “those lowland huts” in both reprints; line 12, “power” in all previous editions, is here altered, as required by the context, to “powers”; in § 8, line 5, “possible” was misprinted “impossible” in both reprints; so also in § 12, line 4, “without” was misprinted “with”; in § 13, line 12, “be indeed” was misprinted “indeed be”; and in § 14, line 6, “prolongations,” “prolongation.” A few variations in punctuation are not enumerated.
The numbering of the paragraphs was introduced in On the Old Road, the numbers being consecutive throughout the volume. In this edition, the paragraphs in the pamphlet are numbered independently (§§ 1-21).]
