[Bibliographical Note.-The following is the list of editions, etc.:-

First Edition (1851).-The title-page of this edition is as shown on p. 511 here. Octavo, pp. 50, followed by a leaf containing an advertisement of “Mr. Ruskin’s Works on Art,” and on the reverse (and also on the reverse of the title-page), the imprint “London: Printed by Stewart and Murray, Old Bailey.” A Prefatory Note, styled “Advertisement,” is on p. 3 (here p. 517). Issued without wrappers on March 6, 1851. Price One Shilling.

Second Edition (1851).-The title-page is different, thus:-

Notes | on the | Construction of Sheepfolds. | By | John Ruskin, M.A., | Author of | “The Stones of Venice,” “The Seven Lamps of Architecture,” etc. | Second Edition. | London: | Smith, Elder and Co., 65, Cornhill. | 1851.

Octavo, pp. iv. +50. Imprint on reverse of title-page as before. Preface to the Second Edition, pp. 1, 2 (here p. 519); “Advertisement,” p. 3. The leaf of advertisements at the end of the first edition does not reappear. Issued, in the same style and at the same price, in April 1851.

Third Edition (1875).-The existence of the second edition had escaped the author’s memory; the preface to that edition was accordingly not reprinted; and this was erroneously described “Second Edition” on the title-page:-

Notes | on the | Construction of Sheepfolds. | By | John Ruskin, LL.D., | Honorary Student of Christ Church, Oxford; Honorary Fellow of | Corpus Christi College, Oxford; and Slade Professor | of Fine Art, Oxford. | Second Edition. | George Allen, | Sunnyside, Orpington, Kent. | 1875.

Octavo, pp. 52. Imprint (on reverse of title-page and at foot of p. 52) “Watson and Hazell, Printers, London and Aylesbury.” The “Preface (called ‘Advertisement’) to the First Edition” occupies p. iii., with an addition (pp. iii.-iv.) of 1875 (here p. 521). Issued on October 1, 1875, in white paper wrappers, with the title-page (enclosed in a ruled frame) repeated on the front, and an announcement of “Works by Ruskin” on pages 3 and 4. Price One Shilling. (1000 copies printed.)

Fourth Edition (1879).-The alterations here are (1) the date, (2) “Fourth Edition” instead of “Second,” (3) a new imprint “Chiswick Press:-Charles Whittingham, Tooks Court, Chancery Lane,” and (4) buff wrappers instead of white, and removal of the Advertisements. Otherwise, this edition is identical with the Third. (1000 copies printed.)
