[diagram] [arches of nave St Simeone Profeta] St S. Profeta . continued
- The arches up the nave have the
succession opposite. all on this
old shafts. and the bases are hidden
This church forms with one of its
walls the side of the small alley
and court described at p 3. Housebook
v.2. so this church is also called
St Simeon Grande.
The tomb - 13th century. built into alley
near is mentioned in Venice and its
lagoons. as that of the Martyr [St Ermolaus]
of Nicomedia.
In the little court behind this
church - built into the wall of the
Parroco’s house; is a square window
formed of a weathered frieze between
two ranges of dentils: the wreath
taking the almond form, with a figure
in each almond - of which a still finer
example is built into the fragmentary
house at S. M. dell Orto: and then
two wreaths are like northern work in
their plan: not so flat cut . nor so circular
in shape. as the common Romanesque
frieze kinds having human figures
in deep relief instead of animals.
