No 106 Campanile of St Fantin 122
No 46. Fig 2. These arches are in the little leaning ancient belfry
close to post office in the Canal which one traverses so
often between it and the Salute: The cornices of mere
upright & horizontal bricks and the rudeness of the
whole, very remarkable: I could not make out
the meaning of the mark which runs along like a
stain and conceals the brickwork under the cornice.
+ Observe also: the Pilaster fig 1 is now a type of four:
This first: then the house at St Fantin, No 41
where all is exactly the same, with the exception only that
the brackets throughout - in archivolt and pil. are
smaller; so that there are 5 to the pil instead of three
and there is no vile attached shaft x: The leaves
which bind the cable on the pilaster head are also finer
and purer at St Fantin: and the look of the whole
earlier and better. The angle shaft of pilaster is all the
same - but better & lighter in leafage of capitals. Archivolt
sec, same.
No 106. The base with its severe angle leaf real size. Section
of it smaller above. Note that this base is an
early transition capital reversed. See Housebook 2 page 18 l.
No 61. Fig 2 a b breadth of dentil falling on abacus, b c
excess of abacus, c d e angle of abacus with under fillets
