                                                                      		certainly not wider than at 1 on last page:  the consequence is that
                                                                      		it has been crushed nearly flat at the top and is almost in a
                                                                      		dangerous condition.  The Lombards were evidently incautious in
                                                                      		narrowing the voussoirs of their round arches:  thus in the
                                                                      Round arches	interior of this church pointed arches have been built, later
                                                                      how much	under the round sub-arches of the nave to support them.
                                                                      weaker than	These narrow voussoirs are however very sublime in their sweep
                                                                      pointed.		although however these shafts have some work to do: those of
                                                                      		the outer gate of the atrium p 33.l. are like the rest of the
                                                                      		arcade, if anything, a little thicker than the moulding above
                                                                      		which is of the same section:  The bold capital in consequence
                                                                      		fig 1 stands clear out from the roll above:  its projection being
                                                                      		entirely useless;  an ungraceful arrangement, yet far better
                                                                      		than a mere banding of the shafts, or continuous impost. 
                                                                      		The placing of the capital is very curious, c2 d2 (fig 2) 
                                                                      		being at a much steeper angle with d e, than c2c.  The
                                                                      		measures of the door jamb a e are a b, 5¾ in. 
                                                                      		bc 5¼ in, cd, ( round) 1 ft 2¼ in. d e 1 ft. ab2
                                                                      		(depth of recess) 1 ft 1½ in:  The roll c d and faces a b
                                                                      		and d e are superbly carved above the capital;  but the shafts
                                                                      		and those of the whole church, are plain:  (a b c of granite &
                                                                      		- c d of white marble) except that a cross and three animals
                                                                      		are carved on each side of cornice  shaft on the pilaster on the right
                                                                      		of main arch of second story.
