[M.144L] [M.144] Traceries. General Plan. Mouldings 144
[diagram] e f is the abacus height & the curves are struck from d
and its correspondent:
It is evident at a glance that this is a curve never used
perhaps intermediate fronts, maybe. This I must ascertain
if possible.
The general idea of the tracery being that of a variously moulded
Mouldings cross on a square abacus let the cusps and rolls be fixed
of 4foil as a b. b c d e f g h opp. on a square abacus from
Traceries whose edge they are equidistant: Then there is evidently
every conceivable degree of depth in the cavetto of the intermediate
moulding: as first, d e with the cavetto shallow:
the bend small, and a deep interval between it and
cusp: This I imagine the earliest form. 2nd g f cavetto
deeper: and interval smaller. 3rd b c: deeper cavetto and
interval gone. This is rare. 4th x h one side of bead work
in cusp a frequent form.
Then observe that in order that the disporportion may not
be so great between the great and smaller roll: in the
form d e; the larger roll is usually a little diminished and the
bead enlarged: while c b is in about true proportion
for c d
Understanding this, we may take as an instance first a small
house near the Teatro Malibran, with an early group of 4foil
