[M.146L] [M.146] House opposite Ca d'Oro. Fondaco de Turchi 146
The upper story is a finestrata of 6 windows with 4 and 2˝
4foils: The moulding is just between that of the Giustinani
and of No 89 being niched so deep in cavetto as the latter
nor so shallow as former. I have thus three distinct
examples of gradation: and the cusp also in its backing,
intermediate between the two others.
The shafts and capitals are both of beautiful white marble
Note how different they look when they are so, from those
of Istrian stone. The mouldings above however & bases
are of Istrian stone - rough chiselled like late Doge’s palace.
The bases are the same as Giustiniani No 90 only their
cavetto not so flat.
The section of capital at p 57 Gothic book fig 1. Its
abacus more Greek and fine in line than usual: The florid
work pure Bon, effectively cut, as seen from below but very
poor when seen close: This I may note as a general character
of the late Florid capitals. They are as ill cut as the
Fondaco worst Byzantine though on a more artistical type - far inferior
de Turchi - far less Greek - to and then the noble sharp leaved
one of Fondaco de Turchi, which I can never enough
admire in its effect from below. That is edged and drawn
with exquisite precision, so all the early leaf plinths as opposed
to the late ones of the Frari.
