III. The purging of iniquity by truth. "By mercy and truth
iniquity is purged." 16. 6. ie . by neither disguising it .
nor treating it as unpardonable: Q. if 10. 18, "he
that hideth hatred with lying lips - is a fool," other-
wise obscure, may be at all understood in this sense .
The connection of mercy with truth is constant : so 20. 28.
as coming from the heaven and earth in Ps. 85. 10. 11.
so Ps. 99. 14.
IV. The Perpetuity of Truth. The life of truth shall be established
for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment, 12. 19.
That I might make them know the certainty of the words of
truth: 22. 21. So after Isaiah has spoken of the Precious
cornerstone" Judgment also will I lay to the line, and
righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away
the refuge of lies. 28. 17. Referring to the stability of Thrones
this subject is connected with the 5th.
V. The Kingliness of Truth. Excellent speech becometh not a
fool, much less do lying lips a prince . 17. 7. Mercy and
truth preserve the King. 20. 28.
