No 47.Fig 1. Details of Traceried window in palace of
the young Foscari. A archivolt with tracery: B tracery
bar: The recess above the dentil at top is, I think intended
to be filled with marble; it exists in nearly all the windows
of this palace: showing the general system very nicely;
Masonry a square rectangle is left in the bricks; this is walled
with marble dentil edge: forming the Sq; then the archivolt
and pilaster are introduced independently, vide opposite.
In these windows the recess seen in section goes all round
and the finial of the window is worked roughly back to it
- only faced with leafage; as if marble were to be put in. It
is occupied now with canvass painted in imitation of it
Traceries. C: Tracery bar, drawn larger with cusp: D tracery bar
without cusp, as at point of arch, the arch thus leaving
a fillet between it and the bar: not meeting it as at
Danielis, Now, it is most singular that the whole window
is not worked with this section. In the two small 4foils
near top, there would have been no penetration large enough
for effect; and the tracery bars have their sides to
those 4foils of the section E: whose vertical depth a b
of course equals that of the other side of the bar, or a2 b2
in B: The cusp in E is unfilleted; and the foil leaves
no fillet at its point, but reaches the point c. as seen
