Capitals. On No 188 it was noted that their effect always depended
on the plinth and leafage band; an example of both is
seen in fig 1 No 194 which is the shaft capital of one of
the piers between mediate and southern aisle Fig 2 and 3 &
4 are its sections; 2, through bell showing its amount
of retiring & prospective. 3. through angles with section
of leaf showing the way its black central mass is cut
back, and 4 across the leaf;
The whole thing is utterly vulgar, the moulding too high
and too much cut this leaf like cast iron below and like a
curl paper above; Now this leaf is nothing more than a
development of the singular process which above studs all
the mouldings of the arches outside; Fig 6 is one of their
archivolts, and is characteristic of all - they are, for
the most part, the shafts also, and the archivolts always,
composed of cavettos, between these rolls, a large roll to
front the cavetto dotted all up with their double processes
like vertebrae of which it is exceedingly difficult to
guess the origin. fig 5 from an arch in southern tower is
