Doges palace; beginning of description: Under At canal of
Ponte de Sospiri First a grand story up to level of top
of pointed arches in front of magnificently solid
masonry with three plain oblong {barred} windows left or,
I think, opened since. Above one of these the effect of
the palace is not improved by a large modern stove chimney
something however like a gauntletted arm brandishing in
its fist a cross truncheon with two trenchers like
opercula at the ends. Above this solid masonry
separated only by a line of dentils, runs the ancient
moulding - which I must draw and above it a plinth (the
continuation of that of the front) added afterwards.
