b c is at the true maximum width of enclosed foliating
space in cusp of small arch: the cusp of the trefoil
in the round is about twice as deep (a is same line in all
these sections)
C. Through great roll and cusp of central or lateral 4 foil
only lateral have no outer fillet, take the dotted line
and in central; at the between the cusps x y is slurred into x2
D. through cusp of great circular 4 foils; the dotted
line being section between cusps. F. through upper triangle
and G. on the {abacus of} pendant of small sub arches.
The expedient employed in the altered section C. by
missing the cavetto and smaller roll, and thus enormously
deepening the cusp, to get greater space for foliation is
to be carefully noted: Again in G. note that - all being
to same scale, m,n is double of m2 n2 in B. Why this is,
will be seen in the very careful profile of the entire
cusp of sub arch at F. H. which shows also the same law
observed in the circle above: and the neat adjustment
of that circle exactly to the apex of pointed arch; the
junction is clearer at K.
It is evident that in this tracery there is no thought of
a continuous series of 4 foils cut off. It is complete
in itself like the traceries of the North.
But by far the most curious Frari tracery is that on No
150 - it is one of the pairs of arches which cross the
windows of the small
