cut literally into hollow shells: and the leaves are
laboriously finished inside: But there is no delight
nor precision about it, like Marino Faliero’s; The Pedestal
bit under the Judgment of Solomon is very base and vulgar
all curled loves, and heavy: utterly differing in all
respects from the other angle leafage.
Its base is of course an addition of later times, and
looks it. It is a mere ring fastened down by meagre
straight scaley bands; full of coarse drill holes
instead of the noble shieldlike leaves. It is rough
chiselled. Its section at p 56 1 pal. book.
Finally, the pilaster capital has leafage like the angle one
meaningless figures with swords, maces, and shields, - one
with a winged cap: (This is the half pillar next
Porta della Carta.
I have now to examine the leafage of these pillars, classing
them by their sections
