and of the whole set, the capitals are about six inches
lower than the outer capitals, while the wooden bracket
beam reaches much higher; nearly to the lips of the
lions in the s[a]pandrils
The section of these morbid capitals at p 25 1 palace book
The bases are A simple, but with good ribbed leaves:
now choked with whitewash.
Of the fine old series of capitals described at p 28
Gothic book it is to be noted further - of the 7th;
it has on the side a; opposite, the daged bird with three
young ones in a leafy hollow, quite lovely; especially
the rounding of the breasts of the nestlings: at b; a
bird also feeding young but now with a crest on head and
plume of ostrich like feathers in tail. At c a single bird
with its beak straight out, emerging from leaves: fore-
shortened head, and see a leaf nodding over upon its fore-
head, nothing can possibly be finer for effective compositn[io]
All these birds most delicately plumed with razed feather.
The leaf belt of this capital is like though not quite so
rich as that at p 231 Palace book.
