138 DUCAL PALACE 106
LATERAL WINDOWS
Compare pages 1, 2, 3 Palace Book to-day (Xmas) to be common to the leaves of the crossed
capitals of triforium of St mark’s. This capital has
rude doves sitting on its leafy basket; its twisted
shaft is the same as the rest and has the same base;
the capital being of course adapted - but the smallness
of the dogt; is remarkable in [ij] all. This central shaft
has round it 42 dogt. each only ½ an in square: (Giving
1 " 9 only for its circumference): I guessed the square
of teeth it must be something more or rather, they must be
a little longer than high: but their number is accurate
and the shaft notmuch more than 8 in in diameter:
Both the capital and shaft are of course sugary white
marble like Parian but the base of red marble, with four
fine ribbed and retractile leaves, as in the other
The plinth is also raised for a base, and joined under- windows.
neatg the shaft. This arrangement is constant. The spiral of the shaft is precisely the same in number
The tracery is all similar throughout the window. and coil, as that described at p 89 i.e. 5 each with
two turns and ahalf but the height of the shaft is here
only 5 " 5½ and its oval fillings only fill the cavettos
exactly and don’t lap over.
The central 4 foil of this window, shows externally
as opposite 1; all but touching inner roll with its
foil points The cusp itself is ogeed in the main arch
